Activity Tissue Culture

Dr. Rashmi Sharma conducted a hands-on activity for biology students on tissue culture techniques using banana corms. The students learned how to propagate banana plants through tissue culture, which involves cutting apical buds from corms and planting them in a soil mixture to culture new plant growth. Tissue culture is useful for producing disease-free banana planting materials and was demonstrated to teach students about this biotechnology method and its advantages, such as producing pest-and disease-free plants with early maturation.

HANDS – ON REPORT

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Tissue Culture Technique Using Banana Corm
(Macropropagation)

Dr. Rashmi Sharma from Department of Biotechnology conducted the

hands-on activity for the students of BSc 3rd Sem on 5th December 2020. The
activity was based on the tissue culture technique using banana corm. Tissue
culture is the growth of tissues or cells separate from the organism.Banana is
typically vegetativelypropagated; thus tissue culture as a propagation
technique provides a robust means to prepare disease-free planting
materials that can provide the first line of defense in developing an integrated
disease-management program for banana.

Tissue-culture techniques established for banana include shoot and meristem

culture, callus culture, somatic embryogenesis. India has been a leader in
tissue-cultured banana plantations. Different banana seedlings are
propagated by biotech companies using tissue culture techniques.
First, the corm was cut from a Banana Plant

Parts containing Apical buds were cut out

Husk was added to the soil in a tray (30% soil, 70% coconut husk)

The corm apical buds were then sown and watered

One of the main reasons of conducting this activity was to teach the
technique of tissue culture and its advantages to the students.
The students got to learn the advantages of the technique such as planting
material free from pests, diseases and viruses; early growth maturation,
short harvesting time period, yielding healthy fruits and plants and much
more.

The technique takes about a month to yield results which will be shared with
the students.
