Control Valve Sizing Spreadsheet

This document provides methodology to calculate the flow coefficient (Cv) of two control valves (23-LCV-001 and 23-PCV-001) on a liquid and gas outlet of a separator vessel. It defines relevant variables and lists compulsory input data needed. The method is based on a control valve sizing handbook and calculates Cv from known flowrate using equations that consider factors like pressure drop, specific heat, gas expansion, and piping geometry. Worked examples are provided to demonstrate calculating Cv for a liquid flowrate based on the control valve catalog.

4 METHOD

The method used is based on the Control Valve Sizing Handbook-Fisher [Ref 1]

4.1 Calculating Cv From A Known Flowrate

1. Determine the equation constant, N.
For Liquid Service:
• Use N1, if sizing the valve for a flow rate in volumetric units (gpm or m3/h).
• Use N6, if sizing the valve for a flow rate in mass units (Ib/h or kg/h).
For Gas and Vapour Service:
• Use N8, if sizing the valve for a flow rate in mass units (Ib/h or kg/h).
2. The data input from section 3.1 above can be used to calculate the following:
• Pressure Drop Ratio, X
• Specific Heat Ratio Factor, FK

k
Eq 1 FK = Eq 2
1.4
For a single valve system, FM = 1. For a multi valve system, FM = 0.74

3. Calculate the gas expansion factor, Y, using the equation below:

ΔP
X M =F M xM
P1 Y M =1− Eq 3
3 Fk XT

The pressure drop ratio factor, XT, is depandant on the type of valve and is generally provided by valve vendor,
typical values can be found in the "XT Factor" tab [REF 2]
4. The compressibility factor, Z, and the gas specific heat ratio, k can be obtained from HYSYS simulation data.

5. Calculate the valve flow capacity, Cv, using the equation below integrating previously calculated values.

T1 Z
C v=
w
N 8 F P P1 Y M √ XM M
Eq 4

q
C v=
P1 − P 2
N1 FP
√ Gf
Eq 5

For valves with no reducer required at the valve inlet (i.e. full bore valve), FP=1 (this may be used in preliminary sizing cases.
In cases where a reducer is required at the valve inlet, a value of Fp must be provided by the user. See section 4.2 for more
details on FP values. Note Cv is calculated on mass basis.
