Factors Influencing Our Perception

There are two main factors that influence our perception: internal factors and external factors. Internal factors are within the individual and include needs/desires, personality, attitudes, interests, sensory organs, brain, past experiences/memory, and intelligence. External factors are physical characteristics of what is being perceived, such as size, shape, color, and texture. Together, internal and external factors determine how we feel, think about, and perceive the world around us.

FACTORS INFLUENCING OUR PERCEPTION

Whatever we perceive depends upon mainly two factors, that influence how we perceive things,
how we feel, see or think about them. These factors are:

a. INTERNAL FACTORS
b. EXTERNAL FACTORS

INTERNAL FACTORS

These are the factors which are present inside the person itself. These factors are different for
different individuals. These include

1. Needs & Desires:  an individual ’s perception about stimuli is influenced by his needs and
desires at that time. Perception varies depending upon changes in his/her needs and desires
from time to time. For ex: when we are expecting the arrival of a train, we listen to its horn
or sound even if there is a lot of noise disturbance
2. Personality: An individual’s personality also decides how he sees, feel, thinks of about the
environment around him. For ex: A person with anti social personality perceives that
everyone around him is trying to hurt him or punish him etc
3. Attitude: A person’s attitude affects his perception. For Ex:  Mr. X is interviewing candidates
for a very important position in his company. He thinks that males are only suitable for that
position. His perception about females is that they are weak for that post as compared to a
male.
4. Interest: When a person is interested in a particular thing, object, stimulus etc, he or she
always tries to perceive the same stimulus everytime. For example: A person who likes to do
photography will always try to see things around him as things to be photographed.
5. Sense Organs: Our Sense organs are responsible for what we hear, see, feel, taste etc. Our
perception depends upon the proper functioning of our sense organs. If our sense organs
are not functioning properly then our perception may get disturbed.
6. Brain: Our brain is where the signals from sense organs are analysed and understood and
things are perceived. If brain is functioning properly then perception occurs without any
errors.
7. Past Experience & Memory: When we perceive things, we try to relate it to the things we
have seen, heard, felt etc in our past memories. We perceive and understand things that are
familiar to us very fast. For ex: A 2year old child who has previously seen a cow, now sees a
horse for the first time. When he is asked what is it, he may say that it is a cow or looks like a
cow.
8. Intelligence: our intelligence decides how we perceive the things around us. The more the
intelligence level of a person the more he or she understands and analyses about that thing
in his or her brain. For ex: when a monkey sees a car, for him it may be nothing according to
his intelligence. Where as when a man sees a car, he may start thinking about its features,
colour, shape etc.
EXTERNAL FACTORS
External Factors which influence perception are all those external physical and structural
features of the object or thing which is being perceived. Such as the size, shape, colour,
texture etc.
A cloth that has bright colour is perceived first and clearly as compared to a dull coloured
cloth.
All the external features of any object or article is responsible for perception of that object
or article.
