Steel is the most important engineering and construction material, composed of iron and less than 2% carbon. It is strong yet recyclable, and used widely in automobiles, buildings, appliances, ships, and medical equipment. Steel production primarily uses iron ore, coal, and recycled steel in blast furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces or electric arc furnaces. There are over 3,500 grades of steel with various chemical and physical properties. Modern cars use 35% less steel but are stronger due to new grades. Global crude steel production reached 1.8 billion tons in 2018, with steel being recycled at high rates due to its durability and low energy requirements during repoduction compared to other materials.

Reflection Paper (Steel)

For me, steel is a kind of material which is hard and commonly used in cars
and construction products, refrigerators, and washing machines, cargo ships and
other medical equipments. It is the world’s most important engineering and
construction material. It composed of iron and carbon containing less than 2%,
carbon and 1% manganese and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, sulphur and
oxygen. Steel are produced by two main types, first is (BF-BOF)(Blast Furnace-
Basic Oxygen Furnace) route which are predominantly iron ore, coal, and recycled
steel, while the EAF(Electric Arc Furnace) route that making the steel mainly
recycled. Mostly of this production methods can use recycled steel scrap. Then,
most new steel contains recycled steel. There are more than 3,500 different grades
of steel according to web, with many environmental, chemical, and physical
properties. So, 35% lighter than the past car which is the modern cars that are
more stronger. Approximately it reached 1.8 billion tons per year of crude steel in
the world for the year 2018 only. Steel is recyclable that requires relatively small
amounts of energy to produce, and possesses great durability. Steel is
environmentally friendly that it may not always look that way with big steel
structures. And compared to other materials, steel requires a small amount of
energy when in terms of constructing lightweight steel elements, and can easily
shape into various forms that gives better shape and edge than the iron.
In automobile industry, steel is most widely used, that you may think of the
number of cars on the roads of just in the city during rush hour which all of them
that are the bodies are made from steel, which are doors, engines, suspensions and
interiors consisting largely are steel. On the average, most of the car, approximate
50% is made of steel. Mostly steel is an alloy and has no chemical or molecular
formula, regardless of its type. Also, It is useful to examine or check some of the
important reactions that takes place in the steel making processes, which is
involves in a number of different reactions which is the combustion of iron scrap
steel, or some cases scrap steel only. There are many uses of steel, which those
are: mild steel is used for building construction and also highly favored building
frame material. It useful to renewable energy resources like solar, hydro and wind
power use the stainless steel components. It has a wider range of temperature that
is used to make large sheets. Stainless steel that give a hygienic to our
environment. That’s why it is widely used for surgical implants. It has become
prominent feature in modern architecture, it because of its easily welding
capability and attractive finishing. Steels are used for as a cutlery material and for
producing industrial goodies like farm vehicles and machines. Steels are
commonly used also ito produce offshore platforms and pipelines and highly used
in general engineering and manufacturing sectors and reduces also the CO2
emmissions.
