2.3 Stoichiometric Calculations

This chapter discusses basic tools of analytical chemistry including stoichiometric calculations. Stoichiometry is defined as the quantitative relationship between reactants and products in a balanced chemical equation. An example reaction is provided for determining the amount of oxalic acid in a sample by reacting it with Fe3+. The moles of Fe3+ used are calculated and then used to determine the moles and grams of oxalic acid present. The weight percent of oxalic acid in the rhubarb sample is calculated to be 0.201% using the balanced reaction and measurement of Fe3+ needed. In summary, the chapter introduces stoichiometry and provides an example stoichiometric calculation to determine the concentration of a compound in a

Stoichiometric Calculation
Stoichiometry:
✓ defined as the quantitative
relationship between the moles of
reactants and the moles of products

✓ represented by a balanced chemical

equation
Example: An analysis for oxalic acid, H2C2O4, in which
Fe3+ oxidizes oxalic acid to CO2.

2 3+
2 Fe Fe(aq)
3+
+ H+ 2HC22CO24O(aq)
(aq) +2
4 (aq) H22O
+ 2H O(l)(l) ⟶
⟶ 22Fe
Fe2+2+
(aq) +
(aq) +
2 CO
2 CO
2(g) + 2
2(g) H
+ 2
3 OH+

The balanced reaction shows us that one mole of oxalic acid reacts with
two moles of Fe3+. As shown in the following example, we can use this
balanced reaction to determine the amount of H2C2O4 in a sample of
rhubarb if we know the moles of Fe3+ needed to react completely with
oxalic acid.
Example: The amount of oxalic acid in a sample of rhubarb was
determined by reacting with Fe3+. After extracting a 10.62 g
of rhubarb with a solvent, oxidation of the oxalic acid
required 36.44 mL of 0.0130 M Fe3+. What is the weight
percent of oxalic acid in the sample of rhubarb?

Solution:

✓ We begin by calculating the moles of Fe3+ used in the reaction.

0.0130 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐹𝑒 3+
𝑥 0.03644 𝑀 = 4.737 𝑥 10−4 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐹𝑒 3+
𝐿
✓ The moles of oxalic acid reacting with the Fe3+, therefore, is

1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
4.737 𝑥 10−4 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐹𝑒 3+ 𝑥 = 2.368 𝑥 10−4 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
2 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐹𝑒 3+

✓ Converting the moles of oxalic acid to grams of oxalic acid

90.03 𝑔 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
2.368 𝑥 10−4 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4 𝑥 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
= 2.132 𝑥 10−2 𝑔 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
✓ and calculating the weight percent gives the concentration of oxalic
acid in the sample of rhubarb as

2.132 𝑥 10−2 𝑔 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4 𝑤
𝑥 100 = 0.201 % 𝑤 𝐻2 𝐶2 𝑂4
10.62 𝑔 𝑟ℎ𝑢𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑏

A conservation of mass is then essence of stoichiometry!
