POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC CAUSES

• The Revolt of 1857 was the result of the rising discontentment of the people against
the British rule.
• Various causes responsible for the revolt included political, economic, social,
religious and military causes.
• The expansionist policies and intentions of the British created a sense of fear,
suspicion and resentment among the rulers of the Indian states.
MILITARY AND IMMEDIATE CAUSE

• The British utilized their political power for exploiting the economic resources and
wealth of India for the benefit of Britain and in the process created widespread
discontentment.
• The sepoys in the colonial army were unhappy with many rules and regulations
imposed by the British.
• The primary and the immediate cause of the revolt was the introduction of the
greased catridges in the army.
