INTRODUCTION
PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANY LIMITED also known as PTCL. PTCL is
the oldest Information Communication Technology (ICT) Company of Pakistan. It
was founded on 14 August 1947. PTCL provides telephone and internet services
nationwide. Government of Pakistan owns the 62% shares of PTCL, 26% shares
are owned by Etisalat company and remaining 12% shares are owned by general
public. But the company is managed by Etisalat organization. PTCL is one of the
reputed TELECOM Company of Pakistan. PTCL is the backbone of Pakistan
Telecommunication, which operates 2000 exchanges nationwide. The total
revenue of PTCL as per year (2019) is RS. 97.97 billion (US $690 million).

HISTORY
It was formed in 1947 with Post and Telegraph department and later on
established Pakistan first Telephone and Telegraph department in 1962 with
12346 telephone lines and 7 telegraph offices all over the Pakistan. In the year of
1991, Pakistan Telephone and Telegraph department was changed to Pakistan
Telecommunication Corporation. In 1996, under the Act of Pakistan
Telecommunication (Reorganization) Pakistan Telecommunication Company
Limited (PTCL) was formed and got listed on all exchanges of Pakistan. In 2005,
26% shares were sold to Etisalat Organization (an Abu Dhabi company) since then
PTCL is managed by Etisalat.
COMPANY PROFILE
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is the oldest
telecommunication provider in Pakistan. PTCL is the only company that provides
basic equipment of telecommunication to other Telecom operator and customers
of the country. PTCL has potential to serve the economic growth of Pakistan. It is
first Telecom Company that has web of networks under the international water.
PTCL operates in around 2000 exchanges nationwide. It has headquarter in the
capital city of Pakistan. In 2019, Mr. Rashid khan is named as the CEO of the
company. PTCL organization is managed by Etisalat organization.

CULTURE
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) organization has a flexible
culture (externally). They welcome the new ideas/innovative thinking. And they
worked over the areas which needed to be improved by gathering information
either externally or internally. They always keep updated with the feedbacks of
customer. But they implement over them lately as PTCL is very big organization.

DIVERSITY
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) have variety of employees
working together from different background to achieve organizational goals. They
believe that their diversified culture is their biggest strength. They have flexible
environment and they always welcome the new technologies innovative thinking.
At PTCL the diversified culture encourages the employees to coordinate with each
other and it improves the efficiency of their work.

CHALLENGES
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) faced many challenges such
as competitors, technology, customer satisfaction, etc. PTCL has a challenge to
influence their customers and retain them from losing them to other telecom
company. PTCL has a challenge to be updated with the new technology that has
been introduced recently in the market. It has also the challenge to offer new
innovative things in the existed product which satisfy the customer. Before setting
a price it must be aware of other Telecom Companies price.
HOW MANAGER MOTIVATE THEIR
EMPLOYEES
In PTCL manager motivate their employees/staff in two ways either by
reinforcement or by punishment. It basically depend upon the situation
that how the employees are performing in the organization whether
he/she is standing on the expectations or not. If employee’s
performance is good he gets a bonus or dinner party from manager
side. PTCL have an event in which they choose employee of the month
from each department just to encourage the employee to work harder
and improve more and inspire the other employees. If the employees
does not do well he gets a punishment such as overtime or gets a
warning to work harder from next time.

INNOVATION
PTCL has been working on innovative ideas for long time. As they have introduce
new products in the markets and they still are working on their existed product
which has been restricted by other Telecom Company. They welcome every
innovative idea and they are updated with the information (internally or
externally).
PTCL can innovate new markets by improving their services. They can introduce
product differentiation by offering new and different packages to people, their
customers. PTCL is restricted to offering the services of internet only and this
restricts their market and customers. Instead of only offering internet services
they can provide products that are related to technology, this way they can
capture the technological market and penetrate here as well.
STRATEGIES
PTCL is using the following strategies:

Growth:
Upcoming product in existing market: To raise the revenue and
sales, the company is launching CHARJI EVO USB that can connects up
to 10 Wi-Fi devices at a time with the speed up to 10 mbps.

Business level strategy:


Stability:
Improvement of product: To speed up the pace of connectivity and to make its
user experience convenient, the company is upgrading its data transmission cable
from copper to gryphon.

Functional level strategy:


Retrenchment:
Reduction in cost: At functional level, the company is trying to reduce cost of
production by cutting off its unspecified expenditure to make more income and to
increase revenue
DECISIONAL MAKING STYLE
In PTCL organization hierarchy flows top to down and it is centralized organization
so most of the decisions made by top management are based on conceptual skills
but at the middle management some manager uses behavioral skills to make a
decision to achieve organizational goal and implement over top management’s
decision. In PTCL organization employees don’t have right to take a decision.
Employees have to just implement over top management/middle management
decision.

PLANNING
In PTCL organization process of planning starts with the top management as
hierarchy flow top to down and employees have to implement on top
managements’ plan such as company wants to launch new product in market first
step of organization is to survey that which type of product people want and how
can we make it so customer like it.

ORGANIZING
In PTCL organization, middle management organize the launch of product very
carefully so that customers don’t face any problem in the search of product.
SWOT ANALYSIS

 Largest and oldest organization of Pakistan.
 Has cable under international water (sea).
 Provider of basic equipment to other telecom company of country.
 Backbone of telecommunication of Pakistan.

 Linked with UFONE one of most usable cellular service of Pakistan.

WEAKNESS:
 Image –Government organization.
 Large staff.
 Slow decision.
 Low focus over customer needs.
 Marketing of products/packages is not good.
 Corruption.
 No innovation on existing product.
 Poor speed of internet.
OPPORTUNITIES:
 Innovation.

 Adopt new technology.

THREATS:
 Strong competitors.
 Involvement of government.
 Customers are influenced by other telecom companies.
 High speed internet service provided by other telecom companies like
ZONG.
 Taxes which raised the prices of packages and causes the shift customers to
other telecom companies.
CONCLUSION
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is a telecommunication
company that provide telephone and internet service to each corner of Pakistan.
It is first Telecommunication Company of Pakistan which has a web of cable
spread in international water. Company motivates their employees at every step
through various ways. Company has many competitors in market which is trying
to bring PTCL at lower level but they are unsuccessful as PTCL is very oldest
organization which operates around 2000 exchanges across Pakistan. PTCL has
many products (telephone, internet and T.V. ETC) but still these products need to
be improved more so that customer gets full satisfaction from the organization.
Company welcomes the new innovative ideas but they implement over those
decision lately as organization has large staff. Managers uses the conceptual skills
to form a decision for achieving organizational goal.
RECOMMENDATION
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is very oldest and
reputed company of Pakistan and it has been working in the field of
internet and telephone line and is oldest in the field but still it is weak in
the field of internet service as compared to other Telecom Company
(ZONG) though PTCL has a spread network in Pakistan. In PTCL the decision
are made by top management as the hierarchy flows vertically and
hierarchy is vey strict, it should be loose so that employees have the right
to present their views/ideas towards product. At last,PTCL should improve
its service towards customers.
