Coolant Temperature Is Low


SMCS - 1395-035

Use this procedure to troubleshoot a low coolant temperature. Also, use this procedure if one of the
following event codes is active or logged.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results

Result: An associated code is


active.
1. Check for Codes
Repair: Troubleshoot any
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the associated codes before
service tool connector. Codes continuing with this test.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the Result: A code is active or

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check for Light Loads Load Result: The load factor is OK.
A. Consult the operator to determine the usual load Proceed to Test Step 3.

than 50 percent.

Note: This overcooling is


caused by the reduced amount
of heat that is produced by the
engine during light loads.

Repair: Operate the engine at


a load that is greater than 50
percent.

If the problem is not resolved,


proceed to Test Step 3.

heaters are OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The jacket water


3. Check for Proper Operation of the Jacket Water
heaters are NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace
damaged jacket water heater.

If the problem is not resolved,


proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Check the Coolant Temperature Sensor

Note: The sensor may be indicating an incorrect


temperature that is within the normal range of the
sensor.
Result: The temperature
A. Connect Cat ET.
sensor is OK.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor the following temperature:
Proceed to Test Step 6.
- Coolant temperature Sensor
Result: The temperature
sensor is NOT OK.
Note: The temperature should rise steadily as the engine
is warmed.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
C. Ensure that the temperature is reasonable.

D. Reference the reading to another temperature


indicator when possible. Refer to Testing and Adjusting,
"Cooling System" for additional information.
5. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring Connectors Result: The connectors and
and Wiring wiring appear to be OK.
A. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Repair: Replace the sensor.
B. Thoroughly inspect the connectors. Refer to
Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors-Inspect" for If the problem is not resolved,
additional information. proceed to Test Step 6.

C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on the connector Result: There is a problem
wires. with the connectors and/or
wiring.
D. Check the harness for abrasions and pinch points.
Repair: Repair or replace the
connectors or wiring. Ensure
that all the seals are properly in
place and ensure that the
connectors are coupled.

If the problem is not resolved,


proceed to Test Step 6.

6. Check the Water Temperature Regulators

Note: The water temperature regulators should not


begin to open until jacket water reaches opening
Result: The temperature

A. Allow the engine to cool and then start the engine.

further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
