Edge Codes - Kodak 8-16 MM PDF

This document provides tables compiled by Robin Williams that list Kodak Edge Codes found on motion picture film stock from various countries and formats. The codes refer to the year and half-year the film was manufactured and are intended to help date films when definitive information is not available from Kodak. However, the dates only refer to manufacture and not exposure, films were often stored or edited out of sequence, and the information should be considered a work in progress rather than definitive.

Kodak Edge Codes

The following table has compiled by Robin Williams of the East Anglian Film Archive.
Codes are located outside the perforations of Kodak motion picture film stock and refer
to the date the film was manufactured. When possible, codes are taken from Eastman
Kodak documentation. When Kodak lists are not available, alternative markings have
been established by examining films with known dates.

When attempting to arrive at a plausible date for a given stock mark, bear in mind the
following variable factors:
The dates refer only to the date the film was manufactured and may have been exposed at
a later date.
Films are often not stored in their original boxes.
Films of different dates are often edited together at a later date
The “expose by” date on the original box is about two years after the date of
manufacture.
Inscriptions on boxes are helpful but may be inaccurate.

This is a work in progress from the East Anglian Film Archive and should not be
considered a definitive list.

Date codes from 1942 to 1953 have been determined by cross-referencing ten film
collections of the period, comparing them with symbol sequences from previous and
subsequent decades. This list is not reliable for the purpose of absolute accuracy, but is
intended for guidance only, in the absence of a definitive list from Kodak.
