Axia College Material: Identifying Anatomical Structures Ch. 3, 4, & 5

This document provides instructions for students to complete activities identifying anatomical structures from diagrams in their textbook. The activities involve labeling diagrams of organ systems and determining the primary functions of various anatomical structures. The systems covered include the digestive system, respiratory system, and circulatory system. Students are to use diagrams in their textbook to label diagrams of these three systems and answer questions about the main functions of different structures.

Determine the primary function of the following system components.

Structure Function- What is the purpose of the body part?

1 Tongue To assist with eating and talking
2 Submandibular gland To produce and release salvia
3 Rugae To accommodate varying amount of food
4 Cardiac sphincter To keep food in the stomach from going back into the esophagus

HCA 220
5 Duodenum To stimulate first part of small intestine
6 Omentum To protect and cushion small intense
7 Liver To produce bile
8 Pharynx To provide passageway for food and inhaled, exhaled air

Use the diagrams on p. 166 to complete sections A & B .

A. B.
1 Nasal cavity 1 Bronchiole

9 Trachea
10 Cluster of alveoli
11 Bronchioles
12 Diaphragm

Determine the primary function of the following system components.

Structure Function- What is the purpose of the body part?

1 Cluster of alveoli To expands and contracts air sac with each breathe
2 Bronchioles To carry inhaled and exhales air to and from alveoli
3 Oxygen To produce energy in the process of metabolism
4 Trachea To carry inhaled and exhaled air to and from bronchi
5 Larynx To provide passageway for inhaled and exhaled air
6 Carbon dioxide To exhale gas that is product of cellular metabolism
7 Red blood cell To help vitamin B12 be aborbed from intenstine into the blood
8 Mainstem bronchus To divide into the inverted Y
9 Diaphragm To contract to enlarge the thoracic cavity and draw in air
10 Capillary To divide into smaller blood vessels

4 Bundle branches 20 Common caroid artery
5 Purkinje fibers 21 Internal carotid artery

Determine the primary function of the following system components.

Structure Function- What is the purpose of the body part?

1 Brachial artery To bring oxygenated blood from aorta to upper arm

2 Radial artery To bring oxygenated blood from aorta to thumb side of lower arm

3 Sinoatrial (SA) node To initiate the electric impulses that begins each heartbeat

4 Aorta To receive blood from left ventricle of the heart

5 Pulmonary valve To carry blood to the lungs

6 Chordae tendinae To stabilize valve leaflets and keeps them firmly sealed together

7 Atrioventricular (AV) node To provide electrical impulses that travel to bundle of His

8 Left ventricle To provide blood that goes to entire body

9 Right ventricle To provide blood that goes to the lungs

10 Inferior vena cava To carry blood from the rest of the body to right atrium
