Topic: Over the Counter Drugs
Issue: Over-the-Counter Drugs Cause Death
In today’s society, many people each day use over the counter drugs for illnesses or for treating
pain. I have chosen this topic because this issue is often overlooked or not taken as seriously as it
should and it is a big problem that needs to be resolved.
As an English student, creating this assignment has benefitted me by allowing me to improve my
essay writing and communication skills. I will gather my information on this issue via newspaper
articles, magazines and by internet research.

Reflection #1
Over The Counter Drugs
Name
Before the beginning of my research on ‘over-the-counter drugs’, I wasn’t entirely aware that
this was actually a very serious and important issue facing our society today. Each day, hundreds
of thousands of people die of overdosing on drugs, most of which are over-the-counter. Not only
is overdosing the problem, but also many persons are not conscious of the types of various
ingredients in their ‘OTC’ drugs, the amount that they are taking of it and whether or not if their
bodies are prone to a reaction from the medication. An example of one of these ingredients is
‘Dextromethorphan’, which is a common ingredient found in cough and cold medicine for
children and teenagers. This assignment has also led me to become much more aware of the
precautions that have to be taken when dealing with certain types of drugs–both good and bad
ones. The use of drugs have been mentioned in the media of today as well, for example, in songs
such as ‘Lead You On’ by MGK and movies like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which both portray this
subject in a very different perspective. Personally speaking, the selection of this issue as a whole
has allowed me to become more alert to matters I hadn’t paid much mind to before. My
knowledge of the general topic of drugs has expanded and inspired me to begin spreading
awareness to assist in the prevention of this major problem. Upon completing this SBA, I now
understand the consequences of drug intake and the effects of overdosing that is taken on not
only adults but teenagers like myself.

Reflection #2
Over The Counter Drugs
Name
Looking back on my artifacts, I have analyzed the use of language. In the audio artifact, which
was ‘Lead You On’ by Machine Gun Kelly (or MGK for short), the artists plays around with the
choice of words in his lyrics. On the first listen, the song sounds as though he is referencing a
young woman who was a part of his past romantically through. However, by listening to the
lyrics a bit closer and comprehending the message, he is actually using personification to
describe the use of drugs, specifically Heroin. The second artifact, the movie, ‘Alice In
Wonderland’ is initially perceived to be a regular children’s film, but on the other hand, it can
actually be linked to the use of drugs throughout the entire movie, and that Alice is actually
experiencing a ‘Drug Trip’ during the entirety of the picture which can be proven via various
scenes and dialogues. A clear example of an allegory, another literary device. In the third
artifact, the word document, the use of language in the article is worded specifically to show that
something enlightening is being presented to the reader. Also by the use of many points of
statistical data, the information is taken at a more serious approach to grasp the reader’s attention
and alert them more on the issue. The use of simple vocabulary plays a vital role as well to allow
those who are reading the data can understand it better rather than using an abundance of
complicate the information.

Plan of Investigation

‘Over the Counter Drugs cause Death’

My individual topic is 'Over the Counter Drugs cause Death'. I chose this to be my sub-topic
because it is a common issue in the Caribbean, but mostly in the Americans.  In society today
this act is mostly done by teens, who suffer from physical abuse, sexual abuse and abandonment.
Another reason I chose this topic is to share with my classmates and teachers, why people
overdose specifically with over the counter drugs to a point where they die or damage
themselves mentally and possibly end up insane. The sources I have collected that reflect my
topic are a print, audio and video.
This benefits me as ‘English A’ student with my writing skills, and it enlightens my general
knowledge about how and why society is changing drastically. OTC drugs accounted for a
significant proportion of overdose presentations at the A & E departments in Northern Ireland.
Higher awareness of the potential of OTC product use in overdose cases (intentional or
accidental) is recommended for both the public and health care professionals. Three factors that
affected me while finding my articles are; some songs have inappropriate language, some articles
were either fake or they had wrong information or some videos did not fit the topic that I was
doing. Ways what these problems were resolved are; look for clean version of songs and make
sure that article is written by a magazine, newspaper or any sources of information

Article Name: Teen Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Abuse

Prescription drugs misuse, especially by teens, has become a national, public health problem.
The rates for new users of prescription drugs are now the second most common drugs after
marijuana used by teenagers to get high.  According to the ‘Partnership for a Drug-Free
America’, the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications is an ‘entrenched
behavior’ among America’s youth. The office of National Drug Control Policy reports that most
adolescents who misuse these products are getting them easily and for free. Although illicit drugs
use among young people has dropped by 23% during the past five years, experts warn that teens
are intentionally abusing prescription drugs to get high because they believe, wrongly, that
prescription drugs are safer than street drugs. Some medications have psychoactive properties
and, because of that, are sometimes abused.
Taken as intended, prescription and OTC drugs safely treat specific mental or physical
symptoms. Taking a drug in a higher quantity or in another manner than prescript can be
dangerous. More people die from overdose of prescription opioids than from all other drugs
combined including heroin and cocaine. People often think that prescription and OTC drugs are
safer than illicit drugs. Most prescription drugs are dispensed orally in tablets and snort or inject
the powder. This hastens the entry of the drug into the bloodstream and the brain and amplifies
its effects. Prescription depressants produce sedating or calming effects in the same manner as
the club drugs GHB and Rohypnol. Opioids can produce drowsiness, cause constipation, and
depending on the amount taken-depress breathing. Depressed respiration can affect the amount
of oxygen that reaches the person’s brain.

Group/Written Report

We selected these three pieces out of the fifth teen because they were the most straight forward,
appealing accurate about our general topic we are doing. Over the counter drugs has negative and
positive effects on people. In these SBAs we will be talking about the negative impact on people
but, mostly teens. The group has not learnt the means of ‘Collaboration’. Collaboration can be
defined as to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor, to
cooperated with or willingly assist an enemy of one’s county and especially an occupying force
and to cooperate with an agency or instrumentality with which one is not immediately connected.
The group has learnt and has no knowledge about various social issues about Over the Counter
Drugs. We’ve learnt that people have reason for abusing drugs, not only social but, mental too.
