UNIT TWO:

HOME MANAGEMENT BUSINESS

CHAPTER I: QUALITY LAUNDRY

Lesson 1: Laundry process, Materials, Supplies, Equipment and Tools.

Laundry involves the washing of any kind of fabric. Laundry is

considered one of the major household chores requiring time, energy, and
resources. With the advent of modern technology and change in people’s
lifestyles (e.g., more mothers working full-time), laundry businesses have
proliferated nationwide.

Laundry Process
Well laundered clothes help improve your physical appearance.
Thus, it is necessary that you learn to launder your clothes properly.
Clothes are laundered either by hand (manually) or by using a washing
machine.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to efficient laundering:

1. Prepare the clothes to be laundered.
2. Read the label of the clothes to be establish what is suitable for the
different items.
3. Check the clothes for any damages that should be repaired. Remove
contents of pockets.
4. Check, too, for any stains and deal with these first.
5. Sort clothes. Separate washable items from those to be dry-cleaned.
Then separate hand wash items, such as delicate fabrics, from
machine washable goods.
6. Soak the clothes in water to loosen the dirt.
7. Hand-wash delicate items in lukewarm water using a mild detergent
or soap flakes. Keep colored items separate at all times until complete
dry.
8. Stains may be removed by soaking in warm water and heavy-duty
washing powder or bleach. Never mix different types of stain
removers, detergents, and bleaches.
9. Rinse clothes in cold water twice or thrice to remove the soap.
10.Hang clothes to dry.
11.Spraying starch solution to clothes before or during ironing adds
stiffness and glossiness to clothes.

Laundry Materials and Supplies

The basic materials used for laundering are the following:
1. Laundry Soap and Detergent. These are basic cleaning agents used to
remove dirt and stains from and kill microorganisms in fabrics. They
come in different forms like liquid or bar soaps and powdered
detergents.
2. Big Wash Basin or Tubs. Wash basins are commonly made from
plastic, tin, or aluminum and are usually used for hand washing
laundry. Wash tubs are usually tiled or made of ceramic material.
Both basins and tubs come in different sizes and shapes.
3. Laundry Brush or Scrub. This is helpful in removing stains and sticky
materials that got stuck in the fabric. This is commonly used for
denims and other hard and thick fabrics.
4. Hamper or Laundry Basket. This is used as container for soiled and
laundered garments. It comes in different forms and shapes.
5. Clothes Hangers and Clothespins. These help in drying laundered
fabrics. Use hangers to dry clothes and other materials. They help
reduce creases and wrinkles in clothes. Clothespins keep clothes in
place while hanged in a clothes-line to dry.
6. Clothesline. This can be a thick wire or rope made of fiber or nylon.
Make sure that the clothesline is setup firmly to withstand the weight
of wet laundered materials.
7. Drying Rack. This is usually used for indoor drying. It comes in
different sizes and height.
Laundry Equipment and Tools.
When working with laundry, a washing machine, clothes dryer, iron,
and ironing board are equipment and tools that are good to have.

1. Washing Machine. For laundry done at home, the use of a washing

machine saves time and energy. This is the most helpful specially
when laundering large sheets of fabric like bed sheets, blankets, and
curtains. A washing machine is also called laundry machine or
clothes washer. The amount of water and detergent used is based on
the size and type of washing machine used. Once you set it on, it
automatically performs the role of a person doing laundry by hand. It
agitated clothes in water while the machine is on.
2. Clothes Dryer. There are washing machines with dryers but you can
also buy a separate dryer. The main function of a clothes dryer is to
remove moisture from washed fabrics. Once the machine dryer is set
on, heated air comes out from tumble that rotates as it allows
moisture to evaporate from the load of fabrics. As it rotates, it
maintains air space between the materials in the load. The only
problem when using a clothes dryer is that sometimes clothes shrink
and become less soft. This is the reason why many prefer drying
clothes on a clothesline under the heat of the sun or in an open air.
3. Iron. An iron is used to remove wrinkles from fabrics. Before the
invention of the electric iron, people used hot charcoal placed inside
an iron container to iron their clothes. Until now, this is still done in
some places, especially remote ones. The iron is also known as
clothes iron, flat iron, or smoothing iron.
4. Ironing Board. This is heat resistant and can be folded when not in
use. The flat surface of the board is usually wrapped with cloth to
provide a soft surface when ironing fabrics. Most ironing boards are
made of wood or metal.
In a Nutshell:
• Laundry involves the was of any kind of fabric.
• Laundry is made easy through the use of different laundry materials,
supplies, equipment, and tools.

Practical Activities:
1. Research on the history of laundry and the evolution of laundry in
the Philippines. Write a report to be shared in class.
2. Invite a laundry business owner to class to talk of his or her
experiences in running his or her business. Have an open forum after
the talk.

Identify the correct term described in each statement. Write your
answers on the lines.
