BECK DEPRESSION INVENTORY 2ND EDITION (BDI – II)
It is an instrument used to assess the severity of depression of adolescents and adults with age of 13
years old and above. It was designed to act as an indicator of depressive symptoms based on diagnostic
criteria in the DSM-IV.
It is a paper and pencil questionnaire which can be self-administered or presented orally. Clients usually
complete this within 5 – 10 minutes.
Scoring for the test is as follows (except for Items 16 and 18):
A = 0 point
B = 1 point
C = 2 points
D = 3 points
Add the score for each of the 21 questions by counting the number to the right of each question you
marked. The highest possible total for the whole test would be 63 and lowest possible score would be
zero. You can evaluate depression according to the table below.
