Activity Sheet Solving Problems On Real Numbers-1

This document provides a lesson on solving word problems involving real numbers. It presents two sample word problems, showing the step-by-step process to identify the given information, plan the solution, write the mathematical equation, solve, and verify the answer. Students are then asked to solve five additional word problems using this IPESA (Identify, Plan, Equation, Solution, Answer) method. They are also asked questions to evaluate their understanding and techniques for solving these types of problems.

SELF-DIRECTED ACTIVITY SHEET IN MATHEMATICS 7

Grade Level: 7 Quarter: 1 Activity Sheet No. 15

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING REAL NUMBERS

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
 Represents real-life situations and solves word problems involving real numbers.
II. PRESENTATION OF THE LESSON
Let’s explore on how to solve problems involving real numbers.

Problem 1: Ezekiel bought 4 shirts at PhP 600 each. How much is he going to pay the cashier for the four
shirts?
Solution:
Remember, before you proceed to this step make sure you read and understand each word. You
may need dictionary or internet connection to look for the words which are difficult for you.
Step 1: Identify. What are we looking for? We need to identify the given and unknown in the
problem. We can represent a variable for the unknown such as “x” to represent the variable.
There are given which are not necessary in solving the problem.
Given: Ezekiel bought 4 shirts at PhP 600 each
Unknown: Total cost of four shirts.
Representation: Let x be the cost of the four shirts.
Step 2: Plan. How will I solve? Strategy is a must in solving a word problem.
Since, the price of a single shirt is PhP 600. We can multiply 4 and 600.
Step 3: Equation. What will be the equation?
(4)(600) = x
Step 4: Solution. Do the Math.
(4)(600) = x
2400 = x
Step 5: Answer. Verify your answer by substituting your answer to the original equation. If both sides
of the equation are not equal, then your answer does not satisfy the equation.
(4)(600) = 2 400
2 400 = 2 400
2 400 satisfies the equation. Therefore, Ezekiel will pay PhP 2, 400 for the 4 shirts.
Problem 2. Mr. Santos has a debt of PhP 150, 550. His 5 children decided to help him pay his debt. How
much will each of his children share?
Solution
Let x be the share of each children.
150 550 ÷ 5 = x
30, 110 = x
Verify,
150 550 ÷ 5 = 30, 110
30, 110 = 30, 110
Therefore, each children of Mr. Santos will share PhP 30, 110 to pay his debt.
IPESA is a method used to solve the problem.
Identify, Plan, Equation, Solution and Answer.

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Solve the following. Use other sheet of paper for solutions.

1. Eric went up 16 floors in a building in Makati. He then came down two floors and then five floors.
How many floors was he from the ground floor after coming down twice?
2. Reyes’ store earns an average of 1, 250 per day. How much is their total earnings after two
weeks?
3. A rope has been cut into 25 equal measures. What is the length of each piece if the length of the
rope is 18/3 m?
4. What is the measure of the side of a square garden whose area measures 50m2?
5. A man carries a load of 867 kg in his jeep. He finds it heavy for his vehicle so he removes a
weight of 286 kg. What is the weight of the remaining load?

IV. GENERALIZATION
1. How are you able to solve the problem?

owes her altogether?
a. PhP 208 b. PhP 644 c. PhP 322 d. PhP 218
2. A submarine is 75 m below sea level. It rises 29 m and then dives 19 m. how far is the submarine
below sea level?
a. 65 m b. 123 m c. 27 m d. 85 m
3. In a market, a vendor is selling three types of fruits weighing 62/3 kg in all. If 75/8 of these are
mangoes, 15/4 kg are lanzones and the rest are bananas. What is the weight of the bananas?
a. 180/24 c. 180/25
b. 181/24 d. 181/25
4. Dolly earns PhP 15.50 per hour for gardening. If she works 25 hours monthly, how much did she
earn for a year?
a. PhP 387.5 c. PhP 4 650
b.PhP 186 d. PhP 300
5. A car is moving at an average speed of 210/5 km/hr. How much distance will it cover in 13/2
hours?
a. 273 km c. 650 km
b. 2730 km d. 65 km
