Korean culture is profoundly influenced by Confucian principles. South Korea
has unique one culture, character, cloth, and food. Diligent and hard work, filial piety, and
humbleness are characteristics respected by Koreans. South Korea is a democratic republic with
a presidential system of government just like here in the Philippines. South Korea is one of
the poorest countries in the mid-20th century, South Korea has experienced rapid economic
growth since the Korean War ended and is now one of the wealthiest  countries in the world and
it is said that President Marcos helped them to bring back the progress of their nation. During the
two decades since it became a democracy, South Korea has face different problems, just like
poor governance, high-level corruption, lack of leadership, political conflict, social polarization,
volatile public opinion, and lack of consensus on major issues which is also the Philippines is
previously and and currently experiencing.

Self-evaluation:
What problems, dilemmas or issues represented in the text resonate with your own experience?
Write here:
Just like in the story, I have the same experience with Yong in searching for employment since I
have already finished a 2 year vocational course as Heavy Equipment Servicing in Cagayan de
Oro City and it is very stressful and tiring. It took 1 year for me to finally find a job. One of the
reasons why i cannot find a job is due to lack of certificates and experience and the employers
prefer to find employees with experience but with the help of my brother I was accepted as
heavy equipment mechanic in Valencia Dinagat Island and working in a mining company. but
because of dreaming high, I proceed to another course as BSED Major Filipino and that is what I
am taking right now for I know this is one of the most stable job here in the Philippines that can
support my family needs.

Zendai is the Japanese pronunciation of seondae, which means “shelf”. These days it’s also
called a “hanging scaffold,” or “work bench,” or “safety board.

2. What prompted the narrator’s recollection of his childhood memory?

Write here:
Maybe because of his experiences during in his job when especially he is outside cleaning the

his co-workmates hanging in the thin air.
\B. Similarities and differences: Refer to the information you have gathered in the pre-test, and
write a short paragraph to illustrate the similarities and differences between the Philippines and
South Korea.

Write here:
South Korea and Philippines are somehow alike especially in the government where they are
both democracy, and is experiencing the same situations just like poor governance, high-level
corruption, lack of leadership, political conflict, social polarization, volatile public
opinion, and lack of consensus on major issues which is also the Philippines is previously and
currently experiencing. But in terms of economy Philippines is far more behind than South
Korea.

C. The “Ladybugs Fly from the Top” is about poverty and how one aspires to have a better
future. Write a short paragraph relating how the story reflects a semblance of the realities the
Philippine society faces.

Write here:
The story reflects a semblance of the realities the Philippine society faces just like in the story
about employment. It is very hard to find especially when you are fresh graduate and you lack
experiences and certificates in the field of what you wanted to apply. Many individuals choose
lower ranks or other positions, let’s say utility jobs just to have only an income to support their
daily needs even they are degree holders. That’s the reason why we heard some saying that “it is
better that I have this job done nothing” (maayu pa ni kay sa wala jud).

D. Write a short plot analysis by answering the following questions:

The protagonist in the story The “Ladybugs Fly from the Top” is Yong a young man who
is in 30’s whose job is a window glass cleaner that hangs on tall buildings which is considered as
a very dangerous job. Even though he has studied all kinds of professional certificates, he also
takes classes that are supposed to get him into a certain firm at a privately run school or
university, One by one the pieces of paper that sucked the blood and sweat from his mother
appear before his eyes and disappear again. The MOS computer certificate, the internet
information retrieval certificate, the logistics management certificate, the office automation
certificate, the accountancy certificate, the multicultural family counseling certificate, the
Japanese certificate, the Chinese character certificate and many more are the result of his
mother’s hard work just to give him a bright future aside from their poverty and difficult
dangerous job that his mother is doing. But he cannot find a good job and he just stuck on the
current job where he is working as window cleaner.

In his job as window cleaner he meets 2 co-workers named Chang and Gonn who are not
close each other. During their work Yong is in the middle since he is just a beginner, and the
other like Gonn, a veteran rope engineer with six years’ experience and he never seen him scared
and Chang is also an expert on this field. Cleaning windows is a dangerous job, just like with the
dream of Yong that a man fell while he is doing his job. With this job both of them experience
fear especially Yong who is only a beginner but because of his needs maybe for the expenses for
his mother, for his daily needs and also because he can’t find another job that’s the reason why
he chose this job even he has plenty of certificates but still he got stuck in this work.

The original situation of the protagonist in the story can be concluded as he is in a

poverty or difficult stage, where his mother is in critical situations and he cannot find a decent
job for his bright future, instead of wasting his time searching for job vacancies he just applied as
window cleaner even though he sees it as a difficult and dangerous job but he decided to stay just
to have a job and conquer his fear especially when doing the job.
When the boss approach Yong to work for holiday he got confused and he wanted to tell
Chang an Gonn if he will accept it but Gonn also was also being told by the boss that’s why he
told Yong to accept the job since Gonn always says “yes” when the boss calls him out to work
on a Sunday or the Chuseok holidays, or when the boss takes a cheap contract and cuts thier
wages. That the reason why Chang and Gonn got a terrible fist fight until Chang’s nose begins to
bleed and Gonn’s shirt gets torn.
The story involves self-realization of Yong when he asked Gonn why he seems not
Afraid on doing his job and Gonn answered “When ye play the guitar ye pluck the strings with
yer fingers, but we play the ropes with our whole bodies, don’t we? It’s natural to sing under yer
breath to the beat of the music.” Then in an unusually curt voice he said,
“You and Chang. If ye saw me trembling up here, how would that make ye feel?” Only after
hearing this he begins to feel assured. And find that Gonn is right, he also concluded that doing
this job they need to face and overcome this fear of heights if you want to survive and continue
this type of job. He also realizes that this was the job of his mother that makes him go to school
and feeds them because he thought that his mother is working as a supermarket cashier. He
realizes it when the time that his mother collapse after racing to the emergency room and filling
in the papers, and rang the number on a note left by one of his Mom’s work colleagues. He met
him at a worksite, cleaning the outside of a building. As he wash down the soapy windows, he
recall the first meeting with the man who’s now his boss.
The story of brobability arise in this story is that Yong will continue to do his job as
window cleaner or will he find another work based on his preferred job? In general, the events of
the story for me is not sufficiently probable to support its overall design since the title of the
story is Ladybugs Fly from the Top, I expect that the story will focus on or relate to ladybugs
since it is its title but the event only of the story just like when they are hanging when they are
cleaning the window he just imagine that they are or he is like a ladybug that flies on air, land on
the leaves and eat aphids, just like what they are doing in cleaning the windows a high buildings.
