TUTORIAL QUESTIONS 2019/2020
TOPIC 1: THE SUBJECT MATTER OF DS AND CONCEPTS OF DEVELOPMENT
1. “Development is a multidimensional and comprehensive concept that cannot be
adequately measured by a single indicator”. Discuss the validity of this statement.
2. With examples from developed and developing countries, compare and contrast
economic growth, economic development, and human development.
3. Giving practical and relevant examples, discuss the contention that “economic growth
is necessary but not sufficient for development”.

TOPIC 2 DEVELOPMENT THEORIES


4. Discuss the major arguments propounded by Rostow in the stages of economic
growth and Nurkse in the theory of the vicious circle of poverty. To what extent do
they provide answers to African development problems?
5. Critically discuss Nurkse’s contention that a country is poor because it is poor. Can
Nurkse’s prescription help overcome poverty in developing countries such as
Tanzania?
6. Is the concept of “exploitation” still relevant in today’s world? Use Marx’s stages of
development and dependency theory to answer this question?

TOPIC 3: POVERTY
7. “Poverty is the most serious social problem and threat facing the African continent”.
Critically discuss this statement highlighting the magnitude of the problem and how it
can be tackled.
8. A famous Greek philosopher Aristotle argued that “poverty is the parent of revolution
and crime”. Argue for or against this statement.
9. “The causes’ of poverty in African countries cannot be understood without a critical
analysis of socio-economic relations and practices that exist between these countries
and developed countries”. Critically discuss this statement and suggest strategies
which can be employed by the countries to get out of poverty.

TOPIC 4: GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT
10. “The gender division of labour within households that assign women responsibilities
for domestic works such as cleaning, childcare, and other household chores is crucial
in understanding gender stratification within a variety of institutions (education,
politics, labour market and much more)”. Discuss this assertion, and explain how does
this gender division of labour get reproduced?
11. Discuss various strategies used to empower women in Tanzania. Are these strategies
viable in achieving gender equality and equity in the country?
12. “Gender inequality in Tanzania is driven by an internalized patriarchal system that has
resulted in lower educational levels for women, less decision-making power within
their households, and less information, financial and educational resources etc.” With
examples discuss this assertion.

TOPIC 5: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY


13. Technological revolution is an engine of any countries’ development. In your opinion
what do you think is the linkage between technological revolution and development?
14. Technology transfer involves the movement of innovations, knowledge, and
techniques from one organization or country to another. Discuss the importance of
technology transfer in the context of the Less Developed countries such as Tanzania.
15. Suggest strategies and/or programs to be put in place to enable low-income countries
to benefit from advances in science and technology both globally and locally.

TOPIC 6: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES


16. “Sustainable development and environmental sustainability are two sides of the same
coin”. Discuss.
17. “Poverty is the main cause of environmental degradation and when the environment
is degraded, the existence and the survival of the poorest become threatened”.
Explain the link between poverty and environmental degradation and suggest what
can be done to address the problem of environmental degradation in Tanzania

TOPIC 7: GLOBALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT


18. To what extent are the on-going concerns of globalization able to provide answers to
Africa’s acute development problems?
19. “Globalization is said to be a universal phenomenon but its effect is not
homogeneous”. Using examples from a range of countries discuss this statement.
