This monthly progress report provides an update on the Performance Based Maintenance of Nyaru-Kamwosor (B77) Road project in Kenya. The 17km single carriageway road is located in Elgeyo Marakwet County and was awarded to Digital Edge (K) Ltd in July 2018 for 44.6 million Kenyan shillings. To date, the contractor has mobilized personnel and equipment but no permanent works or payments have been completed for the February 2019 reporting period. Regular supervision is being provided by the Resident Engineer.

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.1. General
The project road is located in Elgeyo Marakwet County in North Rift Region. The project starts
at Nyaru center and traverses through to terminate at Kamwosor market.
The road is a single carriageway with exceptionally high traffic. The total length of the road is
approximately 17Km long.

2.1. Location
The project road is located in Elgeyo Marakwet County in North Rift Region. The project starts
at Nyaru center and traverses through to terminate at Kamwosor market.
The road is a single carriageway with exceptionally high traffic. The total length of the road is
approximately 17Km long.

2.2. Scope of Works


The works to be executed under the contract comprise mainly of but not limited to the following;
 General: Office administration and overheads/preliminaries
 Site Clearance
 Earthworks
 Reinstatement of stabilized gravel shoulders and reconstruction sections with type 1 AC.
 Provision of drainage structures including access and cross culverts.
 Provision and laying of stabilized Natural material for base and subbase.
 Passage of traffic through the works
 Pothole patching and spot surface regulation of with type 1 AC.
 Provision and application of thermoplastic paints and other road furniture
 Performance Based maintenance services;12 months for the whole road,17km. This will be
checked against pothole patching during the PBC as the instructed works are done
sequentially.
 Any other works as instructed by the Engineer

2.3. Contract Sum


The Contract Sum is KShs. 44,675,544.00. This amount is inclusive of 16% Value Added Tax
(VAT).
2.4. Contract Period
The Contract Period is set as 12 Months with the expected completion date being 14th October,
2019.
2.5. Source of Funding
The project is financed by the Government of Kenya through the Road Maintenance Fuel Levy
(RMFL) fund.

The Commencement Date for the project, as defined in Article 17of the Conditions of Contract, was
15th October 2018. This was 14 days after the issue of the Order to commence by the Engineer,
dated 1st October 2018.
The Contractor has not provided the RE’s office with his programme of works.

6. MATERIAL QUALITY ASSUARANCE

6.1. Material Sources


7.1.
6.1.1. Borrow Pits for Natural Material
The Contractor has acquired a borrow pit at Nyaru where he will be sourcing gravel to be utilised in
the project.
6.1.2. Hard Stone Quarry
The Contractor is sourcing hardcore from a quarry at Flax which will be the source of hand packing
stones used in the project.

6.2. Quality Control


6.2.1. Earthworks, Shoulders and Base
Samples have been taken from the borrow pits for laboratory tests.
Some of the tests to be carried out include;
i. Grading tests
ii. Atterberg Limits
iii. CBR tests
6.2.2. Cement Improved Gravel Base
The materials team is currently doing tests to determine the percentage of cement to be used for
stabilisation in the project

6.2.3. Priming and Tack Coat


Sampling and testing are being carried out in accordance with Section 2 and Part B of Section 15 of
Special Specifications, as these works progresses. The MC30 and K1-60 being used for the same
have been duly tested and random sampling and tests are done as work progress to ensure quality.

6.2.4. Asphalt Wearing Course


The Contractor submitted to the RE the AC mix design, which was approved. Sampling and testing
is being carried out in accordance with Section 2 and Part B of Section 16 of Special Specifications
as works progress.
he Contractor has is using a quarry at Flax centre where he is obtaining the hardcore being used in
the works, mainly for base repairs on the carriageway.

7. ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY PROTECTION/HEALTH &SAFETY

7.1. Environmental Quality Protection

Pursuant to Clause 146 of Special Specifications the Contractor is required at all times to preserve
the environmental quality of the project area. The Contractor has been watering sections where
earthworks is done to reduce the dust that result from the activities.

7.2. Health & Safety


Pursuant to Clause 117 of Special Specifications the Contractor is required to provide, equip and
maintain health and safety throughout the works.
The contractor has provided all the staff with reflective jackets, safety boots, gloves and masks (for
the pavement cutter operator and those handling bitumen).
The contractor has also been employing at least two people who flag the traffic as the work
progresses. He has also put warning signs (Speed control signs) on the road to warn motorists of the
loose chippings and the ongoing works.

8. FINANCIAL STATUS

The Contractor has not requested for any payment.

9. WEATHER REPORT
The temperatures were generally warm with majorly sunny days during the period under review.

10. VISITORS TO SITE

There were no visitors to the site during the period under review
