A Fund-Raising Cause in Support of Jeepney Drivers Who Lost Income Sources During The Pandemic
A Fund-Raising Cause in Support of Jeepney Drivers Who Lost Income Sources During The Pandemic
I. ACTIVITY DETAILS
Identifying Information
One of the many hobbies of being a Boy Scout is collecting scouting memorabilia. This
includes slides, neckerchiefs, and patches. One main way of obtaining these items is by
attending scouting events or completing requirements to earn them. An alternative
method for collecting these items is by buying them from exclusive scouting events or
trading items with other scouts.
The proponent of the project came up with an idea to use the scout’s profound interest of
collecting scouting insignias as an opportunity to realize one of the key clauses in the
scout oath — to help other people at all times.
Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, Scouting events nationwide are suspended pursuant to BSP
National Office Memorandum No. 25, s. 2020 and to the advice of the Department of
Education and the National Government. In addition, many establishments were forced
to be shut down due to the pandemic. Said measures were implemented to prevent the
further spread of the CoViD-19 in our country.
This global health crisis has affected many Filipino lives; and some have it worse than
others. One sector that is greatly affected by the pandemic is transportation. There are
more than 500 traditional Jeepney routes and about 55,000 of traditional Jeepneys in
Metro Manila alone; and as of July 3, 2020, only 49 traditional Jeepney routes (6,000) are
allowed to operate.
Due to safety protocols given by the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) daily
commuters are lessened and it makes sense that only few routes are allowed to operate.
However, we cannot simply turn a blind eye to the overwhelming majority of Jeepneys
drivers who lost their source of income and livelihood. As a result, some jeepney drivers
are forced to beg for money in the very same roads where they earn them.
The third point of the scout law is “a scout is helpful”, and as scouts, we should be
intentional to do our duty to others and that is why the proponent of this activity are eager
to help our local jeepney drivers by taking advantage of the hobby that we have as scouts
as mentioned earlier.
