INTRODUCTION
In an unprecedented circumstance the world is facing now, people both young and old
experience disappointments and fear. Circulation of hoax news adds confusion as it quickly
spreads in various forms of media. ” We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite
hope”, this quote from Martin Luther King Jr. encourages everyone to continue the endeavour
despite the pandemic situation. We must remain optimistic and positive as we face the daily
challenges the new normal brings. Reliance to any form of media promotes awareness but also
test one’s capability to check for factual information that may affect his/her decision.
OBJECTIVE
LET’S RECALL
In the previous module, we learn how headlines were classified. Check if you
can achieve mastery of this lesson.
LET’S UNDERSTAND
Newspaper headlines often include key words because they are shorter
and require less space. We often choose short words, use active verbs and
present tense of the verb in writing headlines. Thus, set of words specially
used for headlining is created to help editors in particular come up with good
headlines. Many words in the lists below are taken from various references
including Journalism book by C. Cruz, and online references (www.
toromagn.wordpress.com, www. academia.edu) among others.

LET’S ANALYZE
Read the given lead and take note of the underlined verb. Write a
good headline by substituting the underlined word with an appropriate
headline vocabulary and follow the required number of words.
LET’S EVALUATE
A) Make a list of more headline vocabulary following this format. Google may
help you or other journalism references. Have at least 15 more words not
included in the list given above.
B) Cut or copy at least 10 samples of each headline vocabulary from national
dailies like PDI, Manila Bulletin, People’s Journal and the like, either
printed or online. Indicate where these headlines are taken from.
