Programme by Research
Doctor of Philosophy

Programme by research provides students with specialisation education in the various fields
of computer science. This is achieved through a completion of academic course work in the
major fields with an independent research project.
A student pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy programme may complete the programme
after a minimum period of two years and a maximum period of five years.
Student will be assigned to a supervisor and TWO or more co-supervisors. At the end of the
study, the student should produce a thesis and sit for oral examination (viva voce).

Master of Science
A student pursuing a Master of Science programme may complete the programme after a
minimum period of one year and a maximum period of three years.
Student will be assigned to a supervisor and ONE or more co-supervisors. At the end of the
study, the student should produce a thesis and sit for oral examination (viva voce).
Programme Requirement
(By Research)
Effective from September 2019 :
a) Credit Requirement for a MASTER OF SCIENCE programme:
A Master student is required to register and pass six (6) credit hours
of courses:
i) A research methodology course; and
ii) Any course listed by the Faculty.

b) Credit Requirement for a DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY programme:


A PhD student is required to register and pass nine (9) credit hours of
courses:
i) A research methodology course; and
ii) Any two courses listed by the Faculty.
Other Requirements
The candidate is required to register:

• SPS5999 Master Research – Master of Science


• SPS6999 Doctoral Research – PhD

This is a research project/work whereby at the end of the


study period, the candidate will submit a thesis. The thesis
will be examined and a viva voce will be conducted to
determine the student’s competency in the field of study.

IMPORTANT: GS11 Progress Report Form must be filled and submitted


online (refer to the important dates related to the final examination)
Other Requirements
LITERATURE REVIEW SEMINAR

ü All first semester students (PhD and Master) are required to present their
Literature Review Report at the Literature Review Seminar.

ü The seminar will be held not later than the 15th week of a semester.

ü Advisor / supervisor and at least one appointed assessor will evaluate the
presentation.

ü Students must produce a manuscript report on Literature Review and submit to the
advisor/ supervisor not later than one week after the date of presentation.

ü Students are also required to submit the similarity report (generated using by
plagiarism checking software such as Turnitin) together with the manuscript.

ü Failure to present and / or submit the manuscripts report on Literature Review shall
result in a "TM" grade for the SPS6999/SPS5999.

Other Requirements
SPS5903/SPS6903 SEMINAR (RESEARCH PROPOSAL)

ü Presentation of research proposal (1 credit).


ü The course should be registered at least on or before 2nd semester.
ü Present research proposal at the ‘Proposal Defense Seminar’.
ü The supervisory committee and an independent member will
evaluate the proposal.
ü The proposal report and similarity report (generated by Turnitin)
should be sent to the supervisory committee not later than two (2)
weeks before the date of presentation.
ü The seminar will be held not later than the 15th week of a semester.
ü This course will be evaluated as satisfactory (M) or unsatisfactory
(TM) grade.

Other Requirements
COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION (CE)
Students pursuing a doctoral programme (PhD) must pass the
comprehensive examination (written and oral examinations),
which should be taken only after completion of all
coursework required for the programme, within four (4)
semesters.

The student is not permitted to take the oral examination


until he/she has passed the written examination. The oral
examination should be conducted not later than 30 days after
the written examination.
Deferment
Course Exemption
Postgraduate students changing programme or field of study
may apply for course exemption and provisions are:
• courses are relevant to programme of study
• the credits to be exempted are for courses equivalent to
courses offered at the University and shall be at least a grade
B or 65%;
• for programmes with coursework, the total number of credits
that may be exempted shall be not more than 30% of the total
credit requirement;
• the courses have been undertaken not more than five years
before the date of his registration at the University;
Course Exemption
• the exemption of credits shall be approved by the
Faculty/Institute/School;
• the application for exemption is made in the first semester.

To ensure comparability of student achievement to UPM


standards, the faculty scrutinises syllabi and assessment grades
from previous institutions.
Transfer
(i) A student may apply for a transfer between programmes
and/or fields of study. Application may be submitted at any
time during the semester. If approved within the first seven
(7) weeks of the semester, the transfer shall take immediate
effect. Otherwise, the transfer shall take effect the following
semester. (Senate 532.10)

(i) If a student whose application for transfer from a


programme with thesis to a programme without thesis (with
credit fee) is successful, he shall be required to pay credit
fees for all courses including those that have already been
taken prior to the transfer. (Senate 532.10)
Transfer
iii. A transfer is allowed once only unless with endorsement of
the University Graduate Studies Committee or its equivalent.
iv. Application for transfer after two (2) semesters of study will
not be considered unless under special circumstances and
with the endorsement of the University Graduate Studies
Committee or its equivalent.
Course Registration
Ø Minimum credit per semester: 6
Ø Maximum credit per semester: 15
• > 15 credits must get approval from the
supervisor/advisor

Ø International students:
• Malay Language course [LPM2100] 2 credits
• English courses (PIE2) 12 credits
• Computer Science courses
Add/Drop of Courses
• A student may add any course within the first two (2)
weeks of a semester.
• A student may drop any course or request to change the
course status within the first seven (7) weeks of a
semester. After the seventh week, dropping of courses is
only allowed with recommendation from the advisor, and
with approval from the Dean.
• A student who fails to drop any course he registers for but
does not participate in during the semester shall be given
an “F” grade at the end of the semester.
Payment of Fees
(i) All students are required to pay the following fees every
semester:
(a) Tuition fee;
(b) Any other fee as stipulated from time to time by the
University.
(ii) All fees shall be paid upon registration. The amount of fees
is subject to change from time to time by the University
without prior notice and shall be applicable to new students
only.
(iii) Jointly awarded degree/dual degree students pay fees at the
host university as agreed in the MoA between the two
institutions.

Research Progress Report
• A student pursuing a degree with thesis shall submit a
research progress report (GS11) every semester.

• The chairman of supervisory committee shall verify the report


and give ‘M’ or ‘TM’ grade based on the level of progress
made by the student during the semester.

• Submission [online]. Failure to do so shall result in a ‘TM’


grade.

Review of Grade

Termination of Candidature
(a) obtains a CGPA below 2.500 in any one semester;
(b) receives two ‘TM’ grades for his research progress during
the duration of his study or on recommendation of termination
from his supervisor after one ‘M’ grade for his research progress;
(c) fails to attain the required minimum CGPA of 3.000 in the
semester following the one in which he was placed on probation;
(d) fails the CE after the second attempt unless recommended
for reversal to a Master’s degree programme;
(e) fails twice in any compulsory course;
(f) fails thrice in the Tertiary English Programme (TEP);
Termination of Candidature
(g) exceeds duration of study;
(h) fails his/her thesis examination; UPM (Graduate Studies)

(i) does not submit the thesis within a stipulated time after the
thesis examination;
(j) violates any rule or regulation as stipulated by the University.
Supervision
• A student who is admitted into a programme with thesis shall be assigned
a study advisor by the Faculty/Institute/School prior to the appointment
of a Supervisory Committee.

• A student who is in a degree programme with thesis shall nominate


eligible persons to be members of his/her Supervisory Committee which
should comprise a chairman and at least:

(a) two other members in the case of a PhD degree programme; or


(b) one other member in the case of a Master’s degree programme.
(c) A jointly awarded/dual degree student must have a minimum of one (1)
supervisor from each institution, subject to the MoA between the two
institutions. (Senate 566.03)
• The nomination of the supervisory committee shall be made at the end of
the first (1) semester. (Senate 621)
Supervision
• Members of a supervisory committee shall not in any manner be
personally related to each other or to the student under their supervision.
A personal relationship is defined as:
(a) a family relationship; or
(b) a business/commercial/financial relationship; or
(c) any other personal relationships which may give rise to conflict of
interest in the workplace.

Graduation Requirements
q A student is eligible for conferral of a degree only if he has
achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.000, and fulfilled the
requirements for courses as certified by the
Faculty/Institute/School, and:
a) in the case of a degree by research, passed his thesis
examination;
b) has settled all fees due to the University.
q All international students (except for students from
Indonesia and Brunei) must have obtained a grade ‘M’ for
the Malay Language course (LPM2100 or its equivalent).
Publication Requirements
q All students in degree programmes by research must show
proof of having published or submitted journal articles
based on research conducted during their candidature
prior to graduation as follows:

q Students in degree programmes by research who are recipients of the
Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) of the University must submit

Scholarly Integrity
• A student is forbidden from committing plagiarism,
falsification, and fabrication of data.
• A student should not plagiarise any idea, writing, data or
invention belonging to other person.
• A student should not fabricate data which include invention
or forgery of research data, recordings or citations, and
report them in writing either in the thesis or publications.
• A student should not falsify data which include
alteration/modification, selective or misrepresentation of
research data or citations, and report them in writing either
in the thesis or publications.

Scholarly Integrity
• A student is not allowed to employ or delegate another
person to do or write the work which the student submits
as his own. This includes the hiring of ghost writers for
writing the entire or part of the thesis or amending parts
or the whole thesis.

Penalty
• Where a student is found to have contravened Rule 59,
disciplinary action will be taken against the student by the
relevant authority of the University in accordance with the
provisions of Universiti Putra Malaysia (Discipline of
Students) Rules 2005.

Plagiarism
(a) publishes, with himself as the author, an abstract, article, scientific or academic
paper, or book which is wholly or partly written by some other person;
(b) incorporates himself or allows himself to be incorporated as a co-author of an
abstract, article, scientific or academic paper, or book, when he has not at all made
any contribution to the abstract, article, scientific or academic paper or book;
(c) forces another person to include his name in the list of co-researchers for a
particular research project or in the list of co-authors for a publication when he has
not made any contribution which may qualify him as a co-researcher or co-author;
(d) extracts academic data which are the results of research undertaken by some
other person, such as laboratory findings or field work findings or data obtained
through library research, whether published or unpublished, and incorporate those
data as part of his academic research without giving due acknowledgement to the
actual source;
(e) uses research data obtained through collaborative work with some other person,
whether or not that other person is a staff member or a student of the University, as
part of another distinct personal academic research of his, or for a publication in his
own name as sole author, without obtaining the consent of his co-researchers prior to
embarking on his personal research or prior to publishing the data;
Plagiarism
(f) transcribes the ideas or creations of others kept in whatever form,
whether written, printed or available in electronic form, or in slide form, or in
whatever form of teaching or research apparatus, or in any other form, and
claims either directly or indirectly that the student is the creator of that idea
or creation;
(g) translates the writing or creation of another person from one language
to another whether wholly or partly, and subsequently presents the
translation in whatever form or manner as the student’s own writing or
creation; or
(h) extracts ideas from another person’s writing or creation and makes
certain modifications without due reference to the original source and
rearranges it in such a way that it appears as if the student is the creator of
those ideas.
