July 2020 FRCEM Final SAQ


The FRCEM Final SAQ was delivered on the 9 July 2020. This was the first digital
examination delivered by the College in response to UK Government social
distancing guidelines for the Global Coronavirus Pandemic. A total of 193
candidates sat the examination via Pearson Vue’s testing platform and test centres.
Unfortunately, some candidates experienced technical issues which have been
reported to and reviewed by the Examinations Department. Approximately 3% of the
cohort experienced technical issues on the scheduled exam date that led to them
having to undertake the exam on the subsequent day.

The College’s Examinations Department follows strict quality assurance procedures


to ensure the highest standards in assessment as required by the GMC’s Excellence
by Design framework for all examinations. As per the quality assurance procedure,
candidate performance, item performance and the pass mark have been reviewed
for fairness.

Based on this review three parts of items (sub-questions) in the examination were
removed from the paper and as a result the marks achievable for this paper is now
177 instead of 180. In addition, the pass mark as described in the table below (which
is comprised of the cut score identified utilising the Angoff Method plus 1 Standard
Error of Measurement) has been reviewed to ensure it is robust and reliable, and that
no candidate has been advantaged or disadvantaged by the day on which they
sat the examination.

The College is therefore content that the analysis of the performance of candidates
