PROPER HANDWASHING

Good evening ma’am Morales. Today I will be demonstrating to you the proper handwashing
technique for nurses in order to prevent contamination of infections. First we have here the
equipment’s we need in order to perform proper handwashing. We have here our bar soap, a
tissue paper and lotion currently however we do not have an orange stick or a flat toothpick.
After checking and assembling our equipments, let us then asses our hands for any cuts or
hangnails. We must also make sure to cut our nails short and to remove any jewelry we have on.
If you are wearing long sleaves, ake sure to roll up the sleeves at mid-forearm level.
We now have here our sink. Make sure to not let clothes touch the sink during the procedure and
make sure the surrounding of the sink is dry.
Let us now turn on the water using a tissue paper just in case the tap of the faucet is
contaminated. Throw the used tissue paper in the garbage bin and make sure that the water is
warm. This is how strong the flow of water in our sink so I cannot really adjust anymore.
Let me wet my hands and lower forearm thoroughly by holding under running water. When
wetting our hands and forearms, make sure to keep them lower than your elbows to let the water
flow from the arms to the fingertips. And a precaution, we must avoid touching any surface of
the sink.
Let us now use our bar of soap. Let us rinse it first then lather.
Let us first rub our hands together palm to palm. Now put your right palm over your left dorsum
with fingers interlaced then vice versa. Next let us rub our palm again but this time with our
fingers interlaced. Next is grip fingers in each hand then rub sideways. After that is the rotational
rubbing of left thumb and vice versa. Next is with clasped finger rotationally rub the palm of the
other hand then vice versa. Next is rubbing from wrist to forearm using rubbing and circular
motions while still maintaining the position of the hand.
After washing, rinse the bar soap then drop it into the soap dish without touching anything.
Let us now rinse our hands, wrists and forearms and fingertips while still keeping pointed
downward.
Dry hands by patting the tissue paper from fingers to wrist to forearms.
Turn off the water using a dry tissue paper then put the used tissue paper in the waste bin.
We now apply lotion to our forearms, wrists and hands.
Let us now check to see if our hands are thoroughly cleaned and dry and asses for any breaks in
the skin.
