NGEC 5: Purposive Communication

First Semester of A.Y. 2020-2021


WEEK 5 - MODULE 5: • VARIETIES AND REGISTER OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE
Introduction:
This is a module intended for a week which aims to help students adopt cultural and intercultural awareness and
sensitivity in communication of ideas. This will help them in their future careers as this is about diversity.

Rationale
Language was mentioned several times in the preceding chapter as an indispensable tool in communication. Moreover, it was even
described as something that is directly connected to culture so much so that one cannot be understood without the other. Let us
break down the language in terms of register.

Intended Learning Outcome


 Determine culturally appropriate terms, expressions, and images (sensitivity to gender, race,
class, etc.)
 Adopt cultural and intercultural awareness and sensitivity in communication of ideas.

Have you observed that you speak and write differently to different people? You will not use the same
language you use with your friends when you speak to someone in authority.
Discussion
Language register pertains to the level and style of your writing or speaking. Language registers maybe frozen,
formal, consultative, informal or neutral. How you use the different language registers determines the vocabulary and
structure of your language. You should make sure that your register fits the situation you are in.
FROZEN REGISTER
This is the most formal register. Formal ceremonies
The language used is fixed or constant. It does not change Prose or poetry

FORMAL REGISTER
The language requires formal English because it is used Professional writing

CONSULTATIVE REGISTER
The language used is specifically for the purpose of Superior and subordinate conversation
soliciting aid, support, or intervention. Client and doctor consultation
In the setting, one person is deemed an expert and the Client and lawyer consultation
other person is the receiver of such expertise. Teacher and student conversation
Employer and employee conversation

INFORMAL REGISTER (CASUAL)


The language is laid back and conversational. The Writing to friends
language is focused on gaining information. Family conversations
The language uses slangs, jargons, and contractions. Chats with people you know very well
Personal e-mails
Phone texts
Short notes
Friendly letters
Most blogs
Diaries and journals
INFORMAL REGISTER (CASUAL)
The language is laid back and conversational. The Writing to friends

INFORMAL REGISTER (INTIMATE)


The language is casual and personal. The language uses Lovers

NEUTRAL REGISTER
The language is not necessarily formal or informal Technical writing
