Sunspot Lab

This document discusses sunspots and provides instructions for using a sun spotter instrument. Sunspots are darker, cooler areas on the sun's surface caused by concentrations of magnetic fields that inhibit convection. The sun spotter allows observation of sunspots safely by projecting the sun's image through a lens and mirror without looking directly at the sun, which can damage eyes. The instructions explain how to position the sun spotter to project the sun's bright spot and rotate a triangle to align a guide spot to view sunspots on the projected surface.

WHAT IS
SUN
SPOT?
Sunspots is non permanent
occurrence on the Sun’s
photosphere that appear as spots
darker than nearby area.

They are the area of reduced

surface temperature caused by
concentration of magnetic field
flux that inhibit convection.
It’s because they form at areas
where magnetic fields are
particularly strong. These
magnetic fields are so strong that
they keep some of the heat
within the Sun from reaching the
surface. The temperature on the
sunspot area is around 6,500
degree fahrenheit.
Why can’t we see stare
directly at the Sun ?

ANS: Staring at the sun can leave you

partially blind. Ultimately, looking at the
sun for a very long time could cause
complete blindness. The eye's lens would
become damaged from too much UV
light.
SUN SPOTTER
An instrument to spot the sun safely
without burning our eye, compose with
folded wooden and mirror lens.

PURPOSE?
There are many purpose that we can use from this
instrument
● Prevent burning our eyes from looking directly at
the sun
● Let student observe data and draw there
observation
● Track a sunspot to discover the change of
position of the sun
● Learn how scientist use solar flare to predict and
detect northern light
1. Place sun spotter , let the sun ray pierce through
len and toward the larger mirror In far corner
2. It then will project bright spot onto paper
3. Unscrew the nut to loosen the triangle
4. 2 small guide dot will appear
5. Rotate triangle to positioned small white circle
into guide spot
6. Once you putt guide spot on the position, sun will
spot on the board
