CHAPTER 4 Steady State Sinusoidal

This document discusses steady state sinusoidal response in electrical engineering. It covers sinusoidal functions and their properties including frequency and phase. It describes how AC voltage and current can have unity, lagging, or leading power factors depending on whether the voltage and current waves are in phase or out of phase. It also discusses instantaneous and average power. It introduces RL, RC, and RLC circuits and how each element stores or dissipates energy. Finally, it provides an overview of three-phase power systems including that they have three independent coils and generate power more efficiently than single phase systems. It concludes with two practice questions.

ENGINEERING I

CHAPTER THREE: STEADY STATE SINUSOIDAL RESPONSE

Sinusoidal Function

2
Sinusoidal Function

• The number of the wave repetition depends on the frequency of

the function. (sinX will make 1 cycle in 2π rad. While sin2X will
make 2 cycles)

3
Sinusoidal Function

4
Sinusoidal Function
• The Sinusoidal Nature of AC voltage and current Can come in
three ways.
(i) Unity Power Factor: where the voltage and currents are in
Phase
V  V m si n t an d I  t   I m si n t

(ii) Lagging Power Factor: where the current is lagging behind the
V  V m si n t an d I  t   I m si n  t   
voltage

(iii) Leading power factor: where the current leads the voltage
V  V m si n t an d I  t   I m si n  t   
5
Sinusoidal Function

6
Sinusoidal Function
• Instantaneous Power:
The Instantaneous Power is the power is the power time varying
power of the system.

7
Sinusoidal Function

8
Sinusoidal Function

• Average Power: The average power is some times referred to as

real power consumption, it is the power absorbed by a resistive
load.

9
RL Circuit
• RL Circuit is a Circuit that contain Resistor and Inductor
• The Inductor stores current with charging and discharging
shown below:

10
RC Circuit

• On the other hand the RC circuit consist of Resistor and

Capacitor, where the capacitor stores voltage.

11
RLC Circuit
• The RLC circuits Consists of all the three elements, Resistor,
Capacitor and Inductor.

12
Three Phase Supply
• Large Generation and heavy loads usually come in 3 phase
system, which is the most widely poly-phase system.
• There are three independent coils in three phase machines and
the generation produces.

Three Phase Supply

14
Exercise IV
Q1
Differentiate between Sinusoidal and Non-sinusoidal signal.
Q2
Draw the wave form of a three phase voltage supply and write
down the equations of the phase voltages.
