Instructions For Aspen Exchanger Design v9

This document provides instructions for using AspenPlus V9 software to design and cost heat exchangers. It outlines 9 steps: 1) opening the software, 2) selecting shell and tube design, 3) inputting process data, 4) inputting stream compositions, 5) repeating step 4 for the cold stream, 6) running the initial simulation, 7) reviewing results, 8) modifying geometry setup, and 9) selecting optimization options. The goal is to use the software to size and cost heat exchangers given stream properties and compositions.

Instructions for Using AspenPlus V9 for Heat Exchanger Design and Costing

1. Open Aspen Exchanger Design and Rating V9 either from the Aspen V9 directory, or it may
show up directly as a choice when you click on the Windows button (lower left of screen).
2. Click New, Shell and Tube, and Create. The screen should show a window entitled “Console
Shell & Tube.”
3. On the left side of the screen under Problem Definitions, double click on Process Data, and fill in
information as required until there are no blue boxes remaining. This is also the page on which
you enter fouling information for the heat exchanger. NOTE: It is recommended that you choose
pressures to ensure both liquids remain as liquids through the heat exchanger.
4. On the left side of the screen under Property Data, double click on Hot Stream (1) Composition,
and then in the “Physical property package” dropdown choose B-JAC. Then click Search
Databank below the component table, and identify each component of your system in the window
that appears by typing in its name next to “Name or Alias” and clicking on Find Now. From the
list in Compounds Found, highlight your compound and click “Add selected compounds”. Repeat
for the other components. When you are done, click on “Use Selected Compounds” at the bottom
right of the window. The components should show up in the table under Aspen Component Name
in the Composition window. To complete the table, specify the weight (or mole) fraction of each
component in the Hot Stream under Composition.
5. Repeat step 4 for the Cold Stream (2).
6. Click Next on the Aspen toolbar. You should see a window that says “Shell&Tube input is
complete”. You may click yes to run the simulation with the default geometry setup.
7. The program will report Warnings that you should consider in interpreting your results. Results of
the heat exchanger design are in the Console window that is accessed from the EDR Navigator.
“Recap of Design” and “TEMA Sheet” will be your most valuable results page.
8. Now you may set specific geometry setup under the Exchanger Geometry folder, selecting the
appropriate file for which you desire specifications. You may also set geometry limits for what
EDR will iterate over (Maximum, Minimum, and Increment) in the Design Options file under the
Program Options Folder.
9. As a final note, in the Design Options file, under the Optimization Options Tab, you may select
whether to optimize for minimum cost or minimum area.
