For people who are battling a mental illness, they often have the feeling that

they have lost control of their lives and of their actions. Mental illness may
have distanced them from friends and family, resulting in low self-esteem and
little self-confidence. Recreational therapy programs can really help patients
regain their emotional footing and help them make connections again.

3. Describe one thing you find fulfilling about working in the industry.

“I find it fulfilling to work in this industry because I can see firsthand and
directly the positive impact I have on another person. I can immediately
provide someone with a resource that can make their lives better for having
worked with me.”

Utah state hospital history: Today the Hospital provides 324 beds for Utah’s mentally ill
citizens who require treatment in a more structured setting. Treatment is provided to
patients ranging from age six years to geriatric age. Specialized programs are offered
for children, adolescents, forensic and adult residents.

Our goal is to always improve the safety and quality of care for our patients.  

Utah State Hospital Adult Services provides the highest level of


psychiatric inpatient care. Five 30 bed units, housed in the Rampton
Building, provide pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions to
assist patients in optimal management of their illness and increasing
life skills.

A treatment mall located off the units, offers group psychotherapy and
psychoeducational interventions that are Evidenced Based.

An integrated multi-disciplinary treatment approach is employed with


collaboration between treating professionals, patients, and their
families. Adult Services clinicians work closely with the Local Mental
Health Authority liaisons from across the state in the assessment of
treatment needs, development of treatment plans, implementation of
care, and the coordinated discharge process to return patients to the
appropriate level of care in the community.
USH also operates a 4-bed short stay (30 days or less) unit that acute
psychiatric services for the rural areas of Utah who lack adequate
access to acute psychiatric beds in their communities.

Activities:

TREATMENT GOALS: improve lesure skills, outlet for energy, emotions, social, peer interactions, LESIRUE
EDUCATION, LESURE PARTICAPTION physical activites like patio, gym, etc

Recreation programs designed to support mental illness, typically include activities such as:

 Exercise groups that focus on yoga, Pilates, or walking


 Active games
 Arts and crafts
 Woodworking
 Working in a community garden
 Spending time with animals
 Listening to or learning to play music
Creative arts, games, PE, guided imagery, pet therapy

Psychoeducational and psychotherapy such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, normalize the


experience of the disorder, share symptoms and present behavioral symtomps.

Focus on realistic thinking, social skills training, coping skills, emotional and motivational
aspects to enable patients to cope
