c. Prove or contradict the following statements.

26-30. Rizal deserves to be called the First Filipino
Rizal deserves to be called the First Filipino because he was the first who sought
to “unite the whole archipelago” and envisioned a “compact and homogenous”
society of all the old tribal communities from Batanes to the Sulu Sea, based on
common interests and “mutual protection” rather than on the Spanish friar’s
theory of double allegiance to Spain as Catholic and the Church as Spanish. Rizal is
also the first Filipino because he is first in the hearts of the Filipinos. Nations are
known by the heroes they have. If the people have the government they deserve,
they also have heroes made of their own images and likeness.
31-35. Although Rizal was not awarded the grand prize for his play El Consejo de
los Dioses, he was able to prove something.
I contradict with that. El Consejo de Los Dioses (The Council of the Gods) is an
allegorical play written in 1879 by our national hero Jose Rizal. It was first
published in Liceo Artistico Literario de Manila review in 1880, latterly in La
Solidaridad in 1883. In December 1900 this was translated in Tagalog. This version
was adapted into sarswela by Pascual H. Poblete and published in El Comercio de
Filipinas.
The play won the first prize award in a 1880-1881 literary contest
commemorating the death of Cervantes sponsored by the Liceo Artistico Literario
de Manila. This is considered as the most sensuous of Rizal's writings, reveals his
magnificent showy side as hispanist and classicist.

36-40. The exciting distractions of youth affected Rizal’s studies at UST

Rizal became fascinated with women during this time, as any young man would.
Namely, Segunda Katigbak, Leonor Valenzuela, Leonor Rivera. Some historians
point out that Rizal "joined parties, took part in gang fights and even cut
classes (Garcia, et.al., 2011)

41-45. Rizals first taste of brutality under the Civil Guard made a deep impression
on him.
When Rizal was a freshman medical student at the University of Santo Tomas, he
got his first taste of Spanish brutality. One dark night in Calamba, during his
summer vacation in 1880, he was walking in the street. He dimly perceived the
figure of a man while passing him. Not knowing the person due to darkness, he
did not salute or say a courteous “Good Evening.” The vague figure was a
lieutenant of the Guardia Civil. With a snarl, he turned upon Rizal, whipped out a
sword and brutally slashed the later on the back.
