HISTORY OF BARTENDING
Ancient Times
Traces of bartending can be found back in ancient Greek, Roman and Asian societies working
in what were called "public drinking houses." Revelers (people who are celebrating with other
people in usually a wild and noisy way) relied on expert craftsman to pour their favorite drinks.
Even the oldest of inns have shown that they too have bartenders attending to their customer’s
needs. Most of the bartenders in that time brewed/produced their own drinks (some of these
owners would even have their own wine cellars to create their own liquor, thus saving money
on expenses) and were alehouse owners or innkeepers (it was known that most bar, pub or inn
owners were the ones who bartended).
Western Europe
It was shown that these so-called owners/bartenders were not mere citizens of the
community. They are members of the higher class of society and this could only mean that
their economic and social statuses are not merely average. Some people would even call them
as members of the wealthiest group in the community. Bartenders were part of the elitist
groups in France, England, Germany and Ireland around the 15th century. Bartending was
considered to be one of the wealthiest trades at the time.
Pre-Prohibition (America)
The bartending profession travelled over to the New World from Western Europe. The Pioneer
Inn and Tavern Law was passed by the United States Congress in 1832, legalizing drinking in
public bar or saloon (place where alcoholic drinks are served) and allowing inns and saloons to
serve alcoholic beverages without having the customer lease a room for the night.
Prohibition
Prohibition in the United States (1920-1933) was the era during which the United States
government outlawed the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages. It
also includes the prohibition of alcohol by state action at different times, and the social-political
movement to secure prohibition. At any time possession of liquor, wine or beer was illegal.
Drinking alcohol was never technically illegal, but one who was drinking was liable for
prosecution on the grounds that they possessed the alcohol they were drinking.
Bartending remains a notable profession to this very day. After prohibition was overturned,
many bars and cocktail lounges opened up across the United States. Bartending schools were
opened so that bartenders were able to produce consistently delicious beverages. (when you
hire a bartender for your next party, you can rest assured that you will receive delicious drinks
from a highly trained and experienced professionals)
Bartending today has expanded as numerous house parties are now attended by skilful
bartenders. Of course, the hygiene and etiquette of the profession inside and outside a bar is
the same. Meaning, although he is working outside the workplace, he should still act as if he’s
in a normal bar attending to the needs of customers.
