What is obesity and overweight and how is obesity and overweight determined?

Obesity is defined as a condition which leads to an excess amount of fat which accumulates over
the body. The accumulated fat increases the body weight which exceeds the healthy state of an
individual. The balance between calorie intake and energy expenditure determines a person's
weight. If a person eats more calories than he or she burns (metabolizes), the person gains weight
(the body will store the excess energy as fat). If a person eats fewer calories than he or she
metabolizes, he or she will lose weight. Therefore the most common causes of obesity are
overeating and physical inactivity.1

Obesity and overweight have in the last decade become a global problem- according to the
World Health Organization (WHO) back in 2005 approximately 1.6 billion adults over the of age
15+ were overweight, at least 400 million adults were obese and at least 20 million children
under the age of 5 years were overweight.

There is a difference between being overweight and obese. Being overweight is generally
defined as having more body fat than is healthy. Being obese is a medical condition in which
excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a bad effect on health, leading to
reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.

Experts believe if the current trends continue by 2015 approximately 2.3 billion adults will be
overweight and more than 700 million will be obese. Obesity is a where a person has abnormal
or excessive amount of body fat that could be a risk to their health. The Body Mass Index (BMI)
measures obesity. The BMI reflects a person’s weight in comparison to their height (weight [kg]
÷ height2 [m2.]). For instance, a woman who is 1.67m in height and weighs 65kg would have a
BMI of 23.3, which is considered to be within the healthy weight range. A BMI of 30+ is
considered obese.2

What is Body Max Index?

Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation that takes a person’s weight and height into account to
measure body size and further determine if your weight is healthy. In adults, obesity is defined as
having a BMI of 30.0 or more, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). But BMI isn’t everything. It has some limitations as a metric. According to the CDC
“Factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass can influence the relationship between
1
medications used in controlling seizures such as carbamazepine [Tegretol, Tegretol XR , Equetro, Carbatrol] and
valproate [Depacon, Depakene
2
https://prezi.com/o9y8ronca8vd/health-assignment-obesity/
BMI and body fat. Also, BMI doesn’t distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass, nor
does it provide any indication of the distribution of fat among individuals.” Despite these
limitations, BMI continues to be widely used as a way to measure body size.3

The BMI calculation divides an adult's weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared.
For example, A BMI of 25 means 25kg/m2.

For most adults, an ideal BMI is in the 18.5 to 24.9 range.

For children and young people aged 2 to 18, the BMI calculation takes into account age and
gender as well as height and weight.

If your BMI is:

 below 18.5 – you're in the underweight range

 between 18.5 and 24.9 – you're in the healthy weight range
 between 25 and 29.9 – you're in the overweight range
 between 30 and 39.9 – you're in the obese range

BMI takes into account natural variations in body shape, giving a healthy weight range for a
particular height. As well as measuring your BMI, healthcare professionals may take other
factors into account when assessing if you're a healthy weight. Muscle is much denser than fat,
so very muscular people, such as heavyweight boxers, weight trainers and athletes, may be a
healthy weight even though their BMI is classed as obese. Your ethnic group can also affect your
risk of some health conditions. For example, adults of Asian origin may have a higher risk of
health problems at BMI levels below 25.4

Your BMI can tell you if you're carrying too much weight, but it cannot tell if you're carrying too
much fat. The BMI cannot tell the difference between excess fat, muscle or bone. The adult BMI
does not take into account age, gender or muscle mass.

This means:

 very muscular adults and athletes may be classed "overweight" or "obese" even though
their body fat is low

3
https://www.healthline.com/health/obesity#classes
4
https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/lifestyle/what-is-the-body-mass-index-bmi/
 adults who lose muscle as they get older may fall into the "healthy weight" range even
though they may be carrying excess fat

Pregnancy will also affect a woman's BMI result. Your BMI will go up as your weight increases.
You should use your pre-pregnancy weight when calculating your BMI. Apart from these
limitations, the BMI is a relatively straightforward and convenient way of assessing someone's
weight.

17

Body Mass Index Chart: Comparison of weight categories

A BMI Chart or Body Mass Index Chart can be a useful tool for visualizing the ranges
for underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity based on a person's height. The
simplicity of the BMI formula has made it extremely popular as an initial diagnosing tool for
determining a person's healthy body weight. The formula does have its shortcomings because it
does not take into account age, frame size, gender, or muscularity.
What factors contribute to childhood obesity?

Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It's
particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems
that were once considered adult problems; diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Childhood obesity can also lead to poor self-esteem and depression.
One of the best strategies to reduce childhood obesity is to improve the eating and exercise habits
of your entire family. Treating and preventing childhood obesity helps protect your child's health
now and in the future.

Some of the major contributing factors of childhood obesity are:

 Diet. Regularly eating high-calorie foods, such as fast foods, baked goods and vending
machine snacks, can cause your child to gain weight. Candy and desserts also can cause
weight gain, and more and more evidence points to sugary drinks, including fruit juices and
sports drinks, as culprits in obesity in some people.

 Lack of exercise. Children who don't exercise much are more likely to gain weight
because they don't burn as many calories. Too much time spent in sedentary activities, such
as watching television or playing video games, also contributes to the problem. TV shows
also often feature ads for unhealthy foods.

 Family factors. If your child comes from a family of overweight people, he or she may
be more likely to put on weight. This is especially true in an environment where high-
calorie foods are always available and physical activity isn't encouraged.

 Psychological factors. Personal, parental and family stress can increase a child's risk of
obesity. Some children overeat to cope with problems or to deal with emotions, such as
stress, or to fight boredom. Their parents might have similar tendencies.

 Socioeconomic factors. People in some communities have limited resources and limited

access to supermarkets. As a result, they might buy convenience foods that don't spoil
quickly, such as frozen meals, crackers and cookies. Also, people who live in lower income
neighborhoods might not have access to a safe place to exercise.

 Certain medications. Some prescription drugs can increase the risk of developing

obesity.5

What complications may develop as a result of overweight and obesity?

Obesity is a term that means you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. It makes you
more likely to have conditions including:
  Heart disease and stroke
  High blood pressure
  Diabetes
  Gallbladder disease and gallstone
  Osteoarthritis
  Gout
  Breathing problem, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for short
episodes during sleep) and asthma.

Heart Disease and Stroke

Extra weight makes you more likely to have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Both of
those conditions make heart disease or stroke more likely.

The good news is that losing a small amount of weight can reduce your chances of
developing heart disease or a stroke. Losing even more weight has been shown to lower the risk
even more.

Type 2 Diabetes

Most people who have type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese. You can cut your risk of
developing type 2 diabetes by losing weight, eating a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep,
and exercising more.

If you have type 2 diabetes, losing weight and becoming more physically active can help control
your blood sugar levels. Becoming more active may also reduce your need
for diabetes medication.

Cancer

Cancers of the colon, breast (after menopause), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), kidney,

and esophagus are linked to obesity. Some studies have also reported links between obesity and
cancers of the gallbladder, ovaries, and pancreas.

Gallbladder Disease

Gallbladder disease and gallstones are more common if you are overweight.
Ironically, weight loss itself, particularly rapid weight loss or loss of a large amount of weight,
can make you more likely to get gallstones. Losing weight at a rate of about 1 pound a week is
less likely to cause gallstones.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a common joint condition that most often affects the knee, hip, or back.
Carrying extra pounds places extra pressure on these joints and wears away the cartilage (tissue
cushioning the joints) that normally protects them.

Weight loss can ease stress on the knees, hips, and lower back and may improve the symptoms
of osteoarthritis.

Gout

Gout is a disease that affects the joints. It happens when you have too much uric acid in
your blood. The extra uric acid can form crystals that deposit in the joints.

Gout is more common in overweight people. The more you weigh, the more likely you are to
get gout.

Over the short term, sudden weight changes may lead to a flare-up of gout. If you have a history
of gout, check with your doctor for the best way to lose weight.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a breathing condition that's linked to being overweight.

Sleep apnea can cause a person to snore heavily and to briefly stop breathing during sleep. Sleep
apnea may cause daytime sleepiness and make heart disease and stroke more likely. Weight loss
often improves sleep apnea.6

What form of media can be used to inform the public about obesity?

Television: Current evidence suggests that screen media exposure leads to obesity in children

and adolescents through increased eating while viewing; exposure to high-calorie, low-nutrient
food and beverage marketing that influences children's preferences, purchase requests,
consumption habits; and reduced sleep duration. If persons can be made aware by seeing the
complications that develop as a result of obesity on television, then this may cause some positive
changes in their choices.
Social media networking sites: Although scientists don't fully understand how obesity spreads,
they suspect that a social network influences what its members perceive as normal and
acceptable. If people see their friends becoming heavier and heavier over time, they may accept
weight gain as natural, even inevitable. We can use these platforms to show that obesity is not
the way to go. We can use blogs, forums and form groups to inform both young and old
worldwide.
