“The Evolution of Communication”

(Activity 1; Part 3)

“Communication; then, now”

Everything is dynamic. Dynamic in a way that evolution is a part of who we are. Truth
is, without evolution; we are nothing. Evolution is important to us. Evolution is a
significant part of progression. Progression, on the other hand is significant in attaining
our purpose in life. I can say this because it defines us a whole. It gives meaning to
attain the things we desire in life. It offers possibilities to improve our way of living and
the way we handle everything around us. In truth, everything is subject to change. We
must all expect changes because they’re all a part of life. It’s a part of progression
without which entraps us with old traditions. The thing is that we must all learn to adapt.
We must always adapt so we can have a new perspective in life. A life that is
surrounded by positivity.

Exchanging of ideas is very important. It helps us generate bigger ideas. Bigger

ideas that will formulate in the progression of society. Progression in a way that
humanity itself will evolve through innovation. Innovation of things and technology that
eases the way of life. But how exactly do we share and exchange ideas? Through
communication of thoughts, feelings, and words. Communication with others to be
exact. Communication has come a long way from today. It has been and continuing to
be practiced because of how it helps us. Help us in a way that we get to share our
ideas. Share and express our ideas which is part of human nature. It is a part of who we
are as a person. It is a part of every person’s life. Because it’s one of the things that
make us humane.

Twenty-years ago today, things were different. Different in many various ways.
Different in the way of life, communication, and habits. Things were very difficult back
then. Not all things are as accessible as they are today. In short, things were not easy.
People user beepers, radios, telegraphs to communicate which can only reach very
limited distance. People making events such as formal gatherings, reunions take years
to form. Which can really be a headache. Simple meet-ups take days to form or
sometimes relying on random encounter. The fact of the matter is that the people didn’t
have any choice. They didn’t have much to do but to simply go with the flow. Hence,
many inventors took this chance to revolutionize our way of communication. Finally,
new devices started to land on the market. Devices which had si much potential in
them. Mobile carriers were now established. Established to join the revolution on the
ease of communication.

Things were hard twenty-years ago. Until now, we reached the modern era. The time
of beepers, radios, telegraphs are over. The long drought that has been plaguing us for
years has ended. The time of phones with no internet connecticity is over. The time
where you can have conversation with the phone itself to gather data is now. The time
where we just gently touch the options on the screen to get what we want and express
ourself is now. The time where we communicate through messaging & video calls not
only with the people in our country but outside as well with ease has come. Because in
truth, everything is so accessible now. Everything with regards to communicating can be
done so effortlessly. All these can be done with a single touch in shich in itself, amazing.
Technology has allowed us to communicate unlike ever before. Communication is
accessible to any. Accessible so that we can connect with our loved ones. Accessible
so we will have more time to do productive work. The modern day of technology surely
is amazing and essential to our everyday life here on earth.

In conclusion, technology taught us a lot of things. Technology taught us to be resourceful in

every way by giving us the proper tools to do our work. Technology has taught us to be inventful
by letting us see that we are capable of making life easier. We are capable of giving ourselves
the proper tools to make life easier. Because technology in itself gave us a glance of the
possibilities and things we can attain. Things we can attain if we just try to actually do them. The
lesson learned here is that we must always try. We must always try to reach as many goals as
we can. Because these are our credentials in life. These crendentials are worth mentioning. Let
us not let our mind be clouded by thoughts of negativity. With this mind set, our mind will only be
put to a state of vagueness. Hence, we must overcome this so that we may achieve great things
in life. Things that will surely put us in a different position. A position to attain success and be
the best version of ourselves.

“Servant Leadership”

(Activity 2; Part 3)

“Glorified Leadership”

If there is a single characteristic of the servant-leader that stands out in Greenleaf's

essay, it is the desire to serve. A walk through The Servant as Leader provides a fairly long list
of additional characteristics that Greenleaf considered important. They include listening and
understanding; acceptance and empathy; foresight; awareness and perception; persuasion;
conceptualization; self-healing; and rebuilding community. Greenleaf describes servant-leaders
as people who initiate action, are goal-oriented, are dreamers of great dreams, are good
communicators, can withdraw and re-orient themselves, and are dependable, trusted, creative,
intuitive, and situational. Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy. Traditional leadership
generally involves the exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid.” By comparison, the
servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and
perform as highly as possible. Servant leadership turns the power pyramid upside down; instead
of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people. When leaders
shift their mindset and serve first, they unlock purpose and ingenuity in those around them,
resulting in higher performance and engaged, fulfilled employees. The most common division of
leadership styles is the distinction between autocratic, participative and laissez-faire leadership
styles. The authoritarian style of leadership requires clearly defined tasks and monitoring their
execution and results. The decision-making responsibility rests with the executive. In contrast to
the autocratic, the practice of a participative leadership style involves employees in decision-
making. More extensive tasks are delegated. The employees influence and responsibility
increases. The laissez-faire style of leadership is negligible in practice.

Servant Leadership as I’ve researched, goes way back in time. Way back in time
wherein people depend upon the servant leaders to make a living. Because in truth, back when
we didn’t have access to things that we can access now (technology, entertainment, etc.) we
really didn’t have much to do. Servant leadership can be found in many religious texts, though
the philosophy itself transcends any religious tradition. Since 1970, when Robert Greenleaf
wrote The Servant as Leader, there has been a slow though somewhat uneven growth in
interest in his ideas and philosophy of servant leadership. Precisely how and why this has
happened will not be completely addressed in this study. The purpose here will instead be to
look backwards to explain the origins of servant leadership as a set of ideas and principles.
Admittedly, the phrase was coined by Robert Greenleaf and it does have a distinct meaning
expressed in his writings. But as Don Frick, Greenleaf’s biographer has pointed out, “His way of
thinking about leadership has triggered fresh ways of thinking about leadership. Ultimately, they
pose ancient questions about transcendent meaning, personal shadows, and possible glories.

Everything is dynamic. Dynamic in a way that evolution is a part of who we are.

Truth is, without evolution; we are nothing.
And I think that being dynamic and evolving are the best
qualities of servant leadership throughout the time.

Servant Leadership and its practice is very important in the world we live in.
Why? Because we learn to listen, because leaders have traditionally been valued for
their communication and decision-making skills. While these are also important skills for
the servant-leader, they need to be reinforced by a deep commitment to listening
intently to others. The servant-leader seeks to identify the will of a group and helps
clarify that will. He or she seeks to listen receptively to what is being said. Listening,
coupled with regular periods of reflection, is essential to the growth of the servant-
leader. We learn to build community as the servant-leader senses that much has been
lost in recent human history as a result of the shift from local communities to large
institutions as the primary shaper of human lives. This awareness causes the servant-
leader to seek to identify some means for building community among those who work
within a given institution. Servant-leadership suggests that true community can be
created among those who work in businesses and other institutions. Greenleaf said: “All
that is needed to rebuild community as a viable life form for large numbers of people is
for enough servant-leaders to show the way, not by mass movements, but by each
servant-leader demonstrating his own unlimited liability for a quite specific community-
related group.

In conclusion, Servant Leadership not only is applicable in the Philippines but in

the entire world. Because it promotes goodness and welfare for everyone. Which is
what God wants us to have and possess. The servant leader is someone who
understands the deep human need to contribute to personally meaningful enterprises.
The servant-leader nurtures the individual’s spirit through honest praise and supportive
recognition. Criticisms and suggestions are not personal or harsh. The joy of the work is
celebrated through means that acknowledge the value of employees’ commitment to
worthwhile activities. The servant leader reminds employees to reflect on the
importance of both the struggles and successes in the organization and learn from both.

“The Concealed Truth; Fraternities”

(Activity 3; Part 3)

Fraternities have been in existence since the 18 th century, ranging

from business fraternities, school, and gang-related fraternities. It has been

practiced in the many different corners of the globe. Its purpose when it

was created was to give people a home where they can help each other.

Fraternities and sororities often use the Greek alphabet to depict their

name. There are usually various initiation rituals for new member before he

or she is accepted into the organization and entitled to the benefits that

come with that fraternity or sorority. These can include a close-knit group of

friends, access to on campus parties, job placements after school with

fraternity or sorority alumnus, and residing in the chapter house—housing

usually given to them by the college or university. The names of these

fraternities are very important in determining what they want to promote.

There are various types of fraternities: General (social), service,

professional, and honorary. The most recognizable form of fraternity is the

social fraternity. Most of these fraternities were founded on dedication to

principles such as community service, academic achievement, and

leadership qualities. We should keep in mind that fraternities indeed have

been created for a clear purpose; to aid one another. To be of service with

one another. And to promote the very foundations of brotherhood.

Fraternities can be traced back from school types which aimed to

help with the studies, to today which promotes violence. And when I say

violence I mean to say hazing. Fraternities and sororities have faced

criticism in various forms, one of the most well-publicized being for

"hazing." Hazing can be defined as the ritualistic harassment, abuse, or

persecution of individuals in a group. In the case of Greek hazing, pledges

may be required to complete meaningless, difficult, dangerous, or

humiliating tasks. Because of the association of fraternities with hazing,

schools such as Bates College started banning fraternities as early as the

mid-1800s. One fraternity, Sigma Nu, was founded in opposition to the

hazing taking place at Virginia Military Institute. Hazing began to be

officially banned at the national and international levels of fraternities and

sororities, is against many colleges' Greek Codes, and illegal in most U.S.

states. This is a big issue in the Philippines which later I will discuss further.

In joining fraternities, you will need to be initiated. Back then, not only

hazing as we know it today was practiced. Requirements may be imposed

on those wishing to pledge either by the school or the organization itself,

including a minimum grade point average, wearing a pledge or new

member pin, learning about the history and structure of the fraternity or

sorority, nicknaming each other, or performing public service. The

pledgeship period also serves as a probationary period in the fraternity or

sorority membership process where both the organization and the pledge

decide they are compatible and will have a fulfilling experience. Upon

completion of the pledgeship and all its requirements, the active members

will invite the pledges to be initiated and become full members. Initiation

often includes secret ceremonies and rituals.

When fraternities are handle the right way, they provide support in all

kinds of ways while if not, then fear, pain, and depression may occur.

That’s why we must be aware of those people joining these kinds of

organization as they are prone to this derogative. Advantages when

handled right include the possibilities of professional opportunities.

Fraternities typically have some professional development and service

opportunities. In fact, while social motives are more common, some

fraternities make community service a staple of membership. Opportunities

for community involvement, resume development and leadership

experiences can all help you grow personally and professionally. Many

fraternities have extensive alumni organizations that are great networking

resources after graduation as well. Some even offer mentoring

opportunities where you can meet and get advice from an alumnus in your
career field. Support, Fraternities offer a support network for college

students. A common motive for membership is social opportunities.

Brotherhood and social interaction are core elements of fraternities. Social

belonging helps students feel more comfortable in the college community.

Fraternities also commonly offer academic support. Many have minimum

GPA standards and offer study tables and academic tutoring. Peer

accountability can help a new student adjust to the rigorous demands of

college. However, in spite of these advantages there are also

disadvantages. There is no other word to characterize the disadvantages

but pain, misery, and destruction.

Fraternities in the Philippines are social organizations of men in

different colleges and universities in the Philippines having common

purpose, interests, and activities. This is basically where the concept of

hazing comes in to play. Hazing means infliction of unnecessary or

excessive work to harass, an attempt to embarrass or disconcert by ridicule

or persistent criticism. Let us ask ourselves, why? Well for the fraternities, it

was some kind of “dedication” which I think is very illogical. For many years

now, many students are getting killed due to fraternity hazings. Almost are
students from the University of the Philippines. Still, students risk serious

injury or even death for the supposed privilege of fraternity membership.

In conclusion, Fraternities often have formal and informal

requirements that take time and effort. Members often have to attend

meetings and feel pressured to attend house parties and other Greek life

events. The social demands and time commitments of fraternity life may

distract you from academic studies and other personal goals while in

school. The time requirements are especially high during the first week or

two of school when new recruits rush for fraternities. You have to attend

social mixers, make visits to various houses and attend fraternity meetings.

Excessive alcohol use can also disrupt a student's school focus. But in

many cases, hazing is the way. Is it really worth it? Is it really worth it

risking your life for a somewhat lost cause? We must always think about

our actions because it can be our downfall. We must value our lives. As it is

a blessing and a gift from God. Let us not promote harm, instead let us try

to repel harm. This way we can better spread the teaching of God.
