GIS

The document contains information about diagnostic tests, USGS maps, map projections, and starting a GIS project on deforestation. It discusses dynamic and static maps, appropriate map scales, definitions of cartographic terms, properties of map projections, and elements of map generalization. It also provides the respondent's hometown coordinates in DD and DMS formats.

Let’s Get Started (Activity)

1. Go to the website of the USGS, read about the history and use of USGS maps, and
download the topographic map that corresponds to your place of residence.
2. What features make a map “dynamic” or “interactive”? Are dynamic maps more
informative than static maps? Why or why not?
 Dynamic maps is more informative because the user can view layers of data by zooming
in and out of the map and also user can drill into each device for additional details. In
other hands Static maps is not interactive, no panning, zooming or changing map layers.

Let’s Get Started (Activity)

1. Determine and discuss the most appropriate representative fractions for the following
verbal map scale descriptions: individual, neighborhood, urban, regional, national, and
global.

 Global is the most appropriate representative fractions because global rates the whole
and real world.

2. Go to the National Atlas website and read about map projections

(http://nationalatlas.gov/articles/mapping/a_projections.html). Define the following
terms: datum, developable surface, secant, azimuth, rhumb line, and zenithal.

 Datum
- is a coordinate system, and a set of reference points, used for locating places on
the Earth.
 Developable surface
- a surface that may be imagined flattened out upon a plane without stretching
any element.
 Secant
- a secant of a curve is a line that intersects the curve at a minimum of two
distinct points.
 Azimuth
- is an angular measurement in a spherical coordinate system.
 Rhumb line
-  is an arc crossing all meridians of longitude at the same angle, that is, a path
with constant bearing as measured relative to true or magnetic north.
 Zenithal
- showing correct directions from the center a zenithal map.

3. Describe the general properties of the following projections: Universe Transverse

Mercator (UTM), State plane system, and Robinson projection.

 Universe Transverse Mercator

- assigning coordinates to locations on the surface of the Earth.
 State plane system
-it uses a simple Cartesian coordinate system to specify locations rather than a
more complex spherical coordinate system
 Robinson projection
- create visually appealing maps of the entire world.

4.What are the scale, projection, and contour interval of the USGS topographic map that you
downloaded for your place of residence?

Scale = 1:24,000
Projection = Transverse Mercator Projection
Contour Interval = None

5.Find the latitude and longitude of your hometown. Explain how you can convert the
coordinates from DD to DMS or vice versa.

DD:
Latitude: 11.158384 Longitute: 124.991888
Solution:
DD = d + (min/60) + (sec/3600)
DMS:
Latitude: 11°9'30.18"N Longitude: 124°59'30.8"E

Let’s Get Started (Activity)

1 Examine an online map of where you live. Which forms of map generalization were used
to create the map? Which three elements of generalization would you change? Which
three elements are the most effective?

 The online maps that I used to find my place is the google maps and it uses
classification, simplification and symbolization to create the map. And there is nothing
to change because it’s element is visible and readable.

2. If you were to start a GIS project on deforestation, what terms would need to be
explicitly defined, and how would you define them?
 If I will start to create a deforestation project, I want to defined the part which have
more trees by shading it with colors.
