TRIADS

This is how to determine the position or inversion of chords:

a) Root position = lowest note of the chord must be the tonic or first note.

b) First inversion = lowest note of the chord must be the third note from the tonic or first note

c) Second inversion = lowest note of the chord must be the fifth note from the tonic or first note

1. A Major (1st inversion). Key signature for A Major scale has 3 sharps. Notes in the scale are
A-B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A.

-Root position for A Major Chord is A-C#-E.

Therefore, A Major chord in the first position, therefore, is C#-E-A. The lowest note in the
chord then is C#, and the tonic note is moved above the fifth note.

2. G minor (2nd inversion). Key signature for G minor scale has 2 flats. Notes in the scale are
G-A-Bb-C-D-Eb-F-G.

-Root position chord is G-Bb-D.

-1st inversion is Bb-D-G

-Therefore, G minor chord in 2nd inversion, therefore, is D-G-Bb

3. B diminished (root position). Key signature for B Major scale has 5 sharps. Notes in the
scale are B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A#-B.

-Root position chord is B-D#-F#. To make this into a diminished chord, the third and the fifth
note must be lowered by half step. Since the third and fifth notes are sharped, to lower by half
step, remove the sharp and it will become natural. Therefore, Bdim chord in root position is B-
D-F.

4. C+ or C Augmented (1st inversion). Key signature for C Major scale has no sharp or flat.
Notes in the scale are C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C.
-Root position for C Major chord is C-E-G. To make it an Augmented chord, raise the 5th note
by Half Step. It will then become G#.

-Root position for C+ chord is C-E-G#.

Therefore, C+ chord in 1st inversion is E-G#-C.
