Activity 2

The document contains 3 problems involving the calculation of fluid flow through orifices in cylindrical tanks: 1) The discharge through a 50mm orifice in a closed cylindrical tank containing oil above water is calculated to be 0.0117 cu.m./s. 2) The specific gravity of the upper liquid layer in a closed cylindrical tank containing water below and an unknown liquid above is calculated to be 0.56, given pressures and orifice dimensions. 3) The time to empty a composite non-prismatic cylindrical tank through a 100mm orifice at the bottom is calculated to be 15.155 minutes.

1. AN ORIFICE OF 50mm AQUARE, WITH C = 0.60 IS LOCATED ON ONE SIDE OF A CLOSED CYLINDRICAL
TANK AS SHOWN. AN OPEN MERCURY MANOMETER INDICATES A PRESSURE HEAD OF 300mm Hg IN THE
AIR AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. IF THE UPPER 4m OF THE TANK IS OIL (SG = 0.80) AND THE REMAINDER IS
WATER, DETERMINE THE DISCARGE THROUGH THE ORIFICE.

Q = 0.0117 cu.m./s

2. A LARGE CLOSED CYLINDRICAL STEEL TANK 4m HIGH WITH ITS BOTTOM ON A LEVEL GROUN D
CONTAINS TWO LAYERS OF LIQUID. THE BOTTOM LAYER IS WATER 2m DEEP. THE TOP LAYER IS OCCUPIED
BY A LIQUID WHOSE SPECIFIC GRAVITY IS NOT KNOWN, TO A DEPTH OF 1m. THE AIR SPACE AT TE TOP IS
PRESSURIZED TO 16KPa ABOVE ATMOSPHERE. A 50mm DIAMETER ORIFICE WITH A COEFFICIENT OF
VELOCITY OF 0.98 IS SITUATED ONE METER FROM THE BORR OM OF THE TANK. THE JET FROM THE
ORIFICE HITS THE GROUND 3.5m HORIZONTALLY AWAY FROM THE VENA CONTRACTA. DETERMINE THE
SPECIFIC GRAVITY AT THE TOP LEVEL.

SG = 0.56
3. A COMPOSITE NON – PRISMATIC 5m HIG CYLINDRICAL TANK SHOWN HAS A FRUSTUM OF A CONE AT
THE BOTTOM, WITH UPPER BASE DIAMETER 2.5m, 1.25m – DIAMETER AT THE BOTTOM, AND 2m HIGH.
THE BOTTOM CONTAINS THE 100mm DIAMETER SHARP EDGED ORIFICE WITH COEFFICIENT OF
DISCHARGE OF 0.60. IF FULLY FILLED TO THE TOP, DET ERMINE THE TIME TO EMPTY THE TANK IN
MINUTES.

t = 15.155mins
