COMP2003

Section B - Statistics

Attempt all questions. All three questions in this section are each worth 18 marks in total.

Yo'u may use the following formulae if required: an exponentially distributed random variable
X with mean E( X) = 1/ A has probability density function

f(x) = Ae- AX for x > 0

and cumulative distribution function

F(x) = 1 - e- AX for x > o.

11. (a) A shop manager records the times customers spend queueing at the checkout, for an

independent random sample of 25 customers. The following data are obtained (times in

minutes, rounded to the nearest minute):

time
frequency

(i) Find the median and the upper and lower quartiles of these data. [3 marks]
(ii) Calculate the sample mean and the sample variance. [3 marks]
(iii) Perform an appropriate statistical hypothesis test to assess, at a significance level of
5%, whether these data provide significant evidence that the mean time customers
spend queueing at the checkout is longer than 5 minutes. State any assumptions
that you make and formulate your conclusion clearly. [7 marks]
(b) A clothing store has two tills, one on each floor. On average, 60% of customers use the
till on the ground floor and 40% use the till on the top floor. The time any customer
spends queueing at a till is exponentially distributed with a mean of 6 minutes if the
customer uses the ground floor till, or exponentially distributed with a mean of 3 minutes
if the customer uses the top floor till. A dissatisfied customer leaves an online review
complaining that after queueing at a till for 10 minutes, she still hadn't reached the front
of the queue and had no time to wait any longer. Assuming that this customer is telling
the truth, find the probability that she was queueing at the ground floor till. [5 marks]

12. A fair die is thrown repeatedly, where each throw is independent of all other throws.

(a) Calculate the probabilities of each of the following events:

(i) the first four throws give four different numbers; [2 marks)
(ii) the first four throws give exactly two 6's; [2 marks)
(iii) the first four throws give two l's and two 6's; [2 marks)
(iv) the first four throws give at least two l's or at least two 6's; [3 marks)
(v) the first four throws give the numbers 6,5,4,3 in any order; [2 marks)
(vi) more than twenty throws are needed to obtain the first 6. [2 marks)
(b) Calculate approximately the probability that the first 120 throws give more than twenty-
five 6's. [5 marks)

13. I'he time X (in hours) needed to repair a computer is a continuous random variable with
probability density function

I(x) ~ { 8~' if x ~ 1/3

otherwise.

(a) Calculate P(X > t), E(X) and Va,r(X). [6 marks)

(b) The cost (in pounds) of having the computer repaired by engineer A is given by

C A = 30 + 50X.
Find the mean and the standard deviation of CA. [3 marks)
(c) The cost (in pounds) of having the computer repaired by engineer B is given by

C ={ 5U if X S 1/2
B 80 if X > 1/2.
Find the mean and standard deviation of CB. [3 marks)
(d) Suppose that 50 computers need to be repaired by a single engineer, and that their repair
times Xl, X 2) ... ) X 50 are independent random variables, each with the same distribu tion
as X above. Approxjmately calculate the fJrobability that the engineer needs more than
24 hours to repair all SO computers. [6 marks)
