Ec407-Mobile and Cellular Communications

This document contains an assignment test for a course on Mobile and Cellular Communications. It includes 6 questions testing various concepts: 1) Different mobile radio systems and proving a formula for co-channel reuse ratio in a hexagonal geometry. 2) Explaining a cellular call process with a timing diagram and deriving an expression for frequency reuse factor. 3) Deriving an expression for free space path loss in dBm, expressing transmit power in dBm and dBW, and calculating received power using these concepts. 4) Explaining three basic propagation mechanisms and calculating received power using a 2-ray ground reflection model. 5) Calculating received carrier frequencies for different mobile motions and explaining time

EC407-MOBILE AND CELLULAR COMMUNICATIONS

Time: 45mins Assignment Test-I Max.Marks

12
1.a) Discuss different mobile radio systems. 3M CO1
b) Prove that for a hexagonal geometry, the co-channel reuse ratio is
given by Q = √ 3 N , where, N = i2 + ij +j2 3M CO1
2.a) Explain with a neat timing diagram how a cellular call is made. 3M CO1
b) Show that the frequency reuse factor for a cellular system is given 3M CO1
by k/S, where k is the average number of channels per cell and S
is the total number of channels available to the cellular service
provider.
3.a) Derive the expression for free space propagation path loss in 3M CO1
b) dBm. 3M CO1
If a transmitter produces 50 watts of power, express the transmit
power in units of (i) dBm, and (ii) dBW. If 50 watts is applied to a
unity gain antenna with a 900 MHz carrier frequency, find the
received power in dBm at a free space distance of 100m from the
antenna. What is Pr( 10 km) ? Assume unity gain for the receiver
antenna.
4.a) Explain the three basic propagation mechanisms. 3M CO2
b) A mobile is located 5 km away from a base station and uses a 3M CO2
vertical λ/ 4 monopole antenna with a gain of 2.55 dB to receive
cellular radio signals. The E-field at 1 km from the transmitter is
measured to be 10-3 V/m. The carrier frequency used for this
system is 900 MHz (i) Find the length and the gain of the
receiving antenna. (ii) Find the received power at the mobile
using the 2-ray ground reflection model assuming the height of
the transmitting antenna is 50m and the receiving antenna is 1.5 m
above ground.
5.a) a) Consider a transmitter which radiates a sinusoidal carrier 3M CO2
frequency of 1850 MHz for a vehicle moving 60 mph, compute
the received carrier frequency if the mobile is moving (i) directly
towards the transmitter, (ii) directly away from the transmitter,
(iii) in a direction which is perpendicular to the direction of
arrival of the transmitted signal.
b) Explain Time dispersion parameters and coherence bandwidth. 3M CO2
6.a) Classify equalizers and show that the basic communication 3M CO3
systems adaptive equalizer is actually inverse filter of the channel.
b) Why we choose nonlinear equalizer rather than linear equalizer 3M CO3
and explain DFE.
