KARVY
1.2 Evaluation of KARVY

It is well said that success is a journey not a destination and we can see it being proved by
Karvy. Under this section we will see that how this ―Karvy and company‖ of 1980 became
―Karvy‖ of 2008. Karvy blossomed with the setting up of its first branch at Mumbai during the
year 1987-88. The turning point came in the year 1989 when it decided to enter into one of the
not only emerging rather potential field too i.e.; stock broking. It added the feather of stock
broking into its cap. At the same time it became the member of Hyderabad Stock Exchange
through associate firm Karvy securities ltd and then Karvy never looked back it went on adding
services one after another, it entered into retail stock broking in the year 1990. Karvy investor
service centers were set up in the year 1992. Karvy which already enjoyed a wide network
through its investor service centers, entered into financial product distribution services in the
year 1993. One year more and Karvy was now dealing into mutual fund services too in the year
1994 but it didn‘t stopped there, it stepped into corporate finance and investment banking in the
year 1995.

Karvy‘s strategy has always been being the first entrant in the market. Karvy again hit the
limelight by becoming the first registrar in the countr y to be awarded ISO 9002 in the year 1997.
Then it stepped into the other most happening sector i.e.; IT enabled services by establishing its
own BPO units and at a gap of just 1 year it took the path of e-Business through its website
www.karvy.com . Then it entered into insurance services in the year 2001 with the launch of
its retail arm ―Karvy- the Finapolis: your personal finance advisor‖. Then in the year 2002 it
launched its PCG (Private Client Group) which looks after its High Networth Individuals .and
maintain their portfolio and provides them with other financial services. In the year 2003, it
commenced secondary debt and WDM trading.

It was a decade which saw many Indian companies going global so why the largest financial
service provider of India should lag behind? Hence, Karvy launched ―Karvy global services
limited‖ after entering into a joint venture with Computershare, Australia in the year 2004.the
year 2004 also saw Karvy entering into commodities marketing through Karvy Comtrade.
Year 2005 saw Karvy establishing a separate branch for its insurance services under the head
―Karvy insurance broking ltd‖ and in the same year, after being impressed with the rapid growth
of Karvy stock broking limited, PCG group of Hong Kong acquired 25% stake at KSBL.

In the year 2006, Karvy entered into one of the hottest sector of present time i.e. real estate
through Karvy realty& services (India) ltd. hence, we can see now Karvy being established as
the largest financial service provider of the country.

2.) INDUSTRIAL BACKGROUND

 INTRODUCTION

A stock broker is someone who buys and sells stocks on the behalf of others for a
predetermined commission. The stock broker basically works as an agent coordinating the
activities of the buyers and sellers on the stock exchange. Along with the trading of stocks,
many stock brokers indulge in giving advice to the clients as to which stocks, mutual funds,
debentures etc. to buy or sell.

 ORIGIN

The history of stock brokers can be traced back to the origins of the first stock exchange in
1602 at Amsterdam. Even before that brokers are said to have existed in France dealing with
government securities. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange was involved in buying and selling of
shares for the Dutch East India Company.
However, the first real stock exchange came up in Philadelphia in the United States during the
late 18th century. Later it was the New York stock exchange which saw a rise in its popularity.
Wall Street, as it was called, became the hub of brokerage activities. Earlier stock brokers were
largely unorganized, but later most of them joined hands to form instit utes and organizations.
Till the 1980's stock broking services were used only by the wealthy class who could afford them.
Later with the advent of the Internet, stock broking became very easy. Thus, the price tag on stock
brokers lowered considerably and their services became available even to the common man.
Stock broking firms have also been allowed to be market makers as long as the appropriate Chinese
walls are put in place. With the advent of automated stock broking systems on the Internet the client
often has no personal contact with his/her stock broking firm. The stockbroker's system performs all
the stock broking functions: it obtains the best price from the market and executes and settles the
trade.

Today, most of the once well-known corporate brand names including mid-sized firms such as
Smith Barney have been swallowed up by global financial conglomerates. Discount brokers (such
as E-Trade, Scottrade, and Ameritrade) have taken a large share of the business by offering highly
discounted commissions, but the companies do not offer investment advice in return all they do is
execute orders.

3.) Services Framework of KARVY

The Karvy Group is a premier integrated financial services provider, ranked among the top-5 in the
country across its business segments. The Group services over 70 million individual investors in
various capacities, and provides investor services to over 600 corporate houses. Karvy Group

excess of 400 cities and towns.

Karvy covers the entire spectrum of financial services, viz stock broking, depository participant,

broking, personal finance advisory services, merchant banking & corporate finance, wealth
management, NBFC, among others.

The Group is professionally managed and ranks among the best in technology, operations and

graphically represented as follows:
 FINANICAL SERVICES

1. INVESTMENT BANKING

Recognized as a leading merchant banker in the country, we are registered with SEBI as a Category
I merchant banker. We have built up a reputation as an able merchant banker over the years by
capitalizing on opportunities in corporate consolidation, mergers & acquisitions, corporate
restructuring and capital raising (including raising resources for corporates or the government). Our

vigor.

The high-quality professional team and our work-oriented dedication have propelled us to offer
value-added corporate financial services and serve as a professional navigator for the long-term
growth of our clients which include leading corporates, state governments, foreign institutional
investors, and public and private sector companies and banks in Indian and global markets.

Our advisory and consultancy roles in restructuring, divestitures, acquisitions, de-mergers, spin-offs,
joint ventures, privatization and takeover defense mechanisms have elevated our relationship with
the client to one based on unshakable trust and confidence.

2. COMMODITIES BROKING

Learn how to be successful in Commodities trading. Our award winning team will help you make
your mark in this emerging investment opportunity.

An ISO 9001:2008 certified company, Karvy Comtrade Limited (KCTL) is India‘s leading
commodities brokerage house. We have membership of Multi Commodity Exchange of India
(MCX), National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX), National Multi-Commodity

early players in this business and have built a very strong research which is widely acknowledged
across our customer base be it the corporates or the traders who comprise our prime customer
segment.
We are by far the only commodity trading entity who have a presence in the wholesale markets
where the commodities are auctioned purely to get a very strong sense on the demand supply for
most of the agricultural products.

3. DEPOSITORY PARTICIPATION

DEMAT ACCOUNT
The onset of the technology revolution in the financial-services industry saw the emergence of
KSBL as an electronic custodian registered with the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and
Central Securities Depository Ltd (CSDL) in 1998. We set standards enabling further comfort to the
investor by promoting paperless trading across the country, emerging as one of the top-3 depository
participants in India, in terms of customers serviced.
Offering a wide trading platform with dual membership of NSDL and CDSL, KSBL is a powerful
medium for trading and settlement of dematerialized shares. We have established live DPMs,
internet access to demat accounts, and an easier transaction process in order to offer greater
convenience to individuals and corporate investors. A professionally managed team and the latest
technological expertise have been allocated exclusively to our demat account division, including
technological enhancements like SPEED-e. This makes our response time quick and our delivery
impeccable. Moreover, a wide national network makes our efficiencies accessible to all.
Under depository participant services, we mainly offer demat account services.

MEAN OF DEMAT ACCOUNT

A demat account holds all your securities, just like your bank account holds your money. The
securities are held in electronic or dematerialized form. Among the financial instruments that your
demat account can hold are government securities, shares, mutual funds and exchange traded funds
(ETFs). It is no longer possible for you to trade in the stock market unless you have such an
account.
HOW DO YOU OPEN A DEMAT ACCOUNT

You have to do the following:

1. Choose a depository participant, such as Karvy.

2. Fill up the relevant form Karvy provides you with and also submit copies of required
documents (proof of address and identity), along with a passport-sized photograph. You
should also have a PAN card and the original documents for verification.

3. We will verify the details you provide in the form through an in-person verification process.

4. After processing your application, we will provide you with a client id. or account number,
which you can use to access your account.

You could also open an account online from anywhere, at your convenience, and don‘t have to send
any physical documents. Just submit scanned document copies along with the filled-in form for
account opening. We will do the in-person verification via internet, through video chat.
Alternatively, the electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) process can be completed online using
your Aadhaar number. You provide us with your PAN and Aadhar information and the details
provided for your Aadhaar are linked to your demat account for eKYC.
The mobile phone number and email address you have registered with Aadhaar can be used for
authentication of the process through a one-time password. You also have to provide bank account
details. In case you don‘t have a mobile number or email address linked with your Aadhaar, you
have to visit one of Karvy‘s branches for finger-print verification.

THE BENEFITS OF A DEMAT ACCOUNT

The major benefits include the following:

1. This mode of holding securities is quite easy and convenient and helps reduce brokerage
fees.

2. No stamp duty is involved in transfer of securities as the securities are in electronic form.

3. There is no restriction on the transactions and you could buy or sell even a single share,
which is not possible with shares in physical form.
4. The risk of theft, mutilation or loss of securities while moving them to and from registrars is
not there since securities are in electronic form.

5. As soon you have the securities in your account, you are their legal owner. You don‘t have
to re-send them to the registrar.

6. Rights, bonus and other entitlements are disbursed faster.

7. Besides company stock, your demat account is useful for investment in gold exchange-
traded funds, and commodity futures.

8. You can use securities such as shares, mutual fund units, shares and debentures held in your
account as collateral for taking loans.

4. DISTRIBUTION OF FINANCIAL PRODUCTS

Securities and investments created to provide buyers and sellers with short term or long term
financial gains are known as financial products. These allow liquidity to circulate in an economy
and risk to be spread. Many of the financial products are in the form of contracts that you can
negotiate on financial markets. The contracts stipulate cash movement at present and in future,
depending on conditions stated.
Financial products can help us grow the amount of money we have to meet various financial goals,
such as retirement, children‘s education, marriage and so on.
Before you invest in any financial product, you should learn about any potential risks, limitations,
costs as well as other characteristics of the products.

TYPES OF FINANCIAL PRODUCTS

The number of financial products and services in India has increased multifold. It requires a lot of
patience and skill to pick up the best suited option from this huge list of financial products available
with us. Here are some of them:
MUTUAL FUNDS

A mutual fund is a professionally managed type of collective investment scheme that pools money
from many investors and invests it in stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and/or
other securities. By investing in Mutual Funds, one can have benefit of diversification. Since they
are managed by professionals, one need not track the markets regularly.

NPS

National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, defined contribution retirement savings scheme
designed to enable the subscribers to make optimum decisions regarding their future through
systematic savings during their working life. NPS seeks to inculcate the habit of saving for
retirement amongst the citizens.

CORPORATE FIXED DEPOSITS

There are various companies which offer Fixed Deposits and the rates on offer are generally higher
than the rates offered by Banks. These instruments can be considered based on their rating, interest
rates and the cash flows. The corporate fixed deposits are available for various tenures with Interest
being paid Monthly, Quarterly, Half Yearly, Annually or at Maturity. Investors looking at regular
cash flows and interested in fixed rate of interest can invest in these deposits.

CAPITAL GAIN BONDS

Capital gain bonds are another type of bonds available, where any person can avail exemption in
respect of long-term capital gains (arising from the sale of long term capital asset other than equity
shares and securities) if the capital gain is invested in Capital Gain bonds u/s 54EC. The exemption
will be the amount of capital gain or the amount of investment made, whichever is less. Interest rate
offered on these bonds is around 6% per annum.

5. CURRENCY DERIVATION

Karvy Currency Derivatives Segment, a specialized group vertical within Karvy Stock Broking
Limited, has been established in 2008 to cater to the growing needs of corporate houses to manage
currency exchange rate risk.
With the changing dynamics and increasing volatility of exchange rates across the globe, companies
exposed to currency risk face the challenge of maintaining continued profit margins. Currency
Derivatives would be one of the best options to manage any related exchange rate risk and be free
from the worries of market uncertainties.

At Karvy Currency Derivatives Segment (CDS), we provide customized hedging strategies for
importers, exporters and companies with foreign exchange exposure. We offer forex advisory and

4.3 Basic Equity Online Trading Concept

Market Capitalization

It is the total valuation of the company based on the current share price and the total number of
outstanding stocks. For example, if a share is valued at Rs. 100 per share and there are one lakh
shares held by public investors, then its market capitalization will be Rs.10, 00,000.
Bull and Bear markets

Often wondered why the terms ‗bull‘ and ‗bear‘ is used to describe markets. It is because of the
defensive mechanism of these animals when they attack. A bull thrusts its opponent up in the air,
while a bear swipes its paws down. In market terminology, if the market is in uptrend it is called a
bull market and if it is in downtrend it is bear market.

Settlement

Settlement is the procedure undertaken by Clearing Corporation of India. The trades are cleared to
determine the obligations of counterparties to deliver funds/securities as per settlement schedule.
Buyer/seller delivers funds/securities and receives securities/funds and acquires ownership over
them.

In India, settlement happens in T+2 days, where ‗T‘ is the day of transaction. Saturdays and
Sundays are non-working days. So, if a transaction is done on Friday, it will be settled on Tuesday.

5.2 Share Market Services

Each and every one of us has defined goals in life and have time limits by which we have to attain
these goals. For example, you may plan to study abroad, buy a car, build a home, etc. To achieve
these, you need to have a proper financial planning. By this, I mean investing has to become your
habit. Financial assets or share markets provide high returns and so start investing at a young age
and do it regularly for a long period of time.
You can invest in the share market for short term or long term depending on your needs. Based on
your risk appetite, age and dependency, you can be a trader or investor in the share market. As
markets are always associated with risk, you have to read carefully. The various investment options
in the Indian share market today are equity, mutual funds, SIP, IPO, bonds, debentures, derivatives,
commodity, currency, etc.

 Types of Stocks to Invest in Share Market

When you buy a share, you can be a common shareholder or preferred shareholder on the basis of
ownership.

 As a common shareholder, you are permitted to vote in shareholder meetings and you are
eligible to receive dividends. If the company where you have invested goes bankrupt, you
will receive the share of proceeds of liquidation only after all creditors and preferred
shareholders have been paid.

 As a preferred shareholder, you may not have voting rights. But you will get dividends
before common shareholder receives it.
 On the basis of market capitalization, you can invest in large cap, mid cap and small cap
stocks. Market capitalization = share price*number of shares outstanding

 Outstanding shares are the shares that can be bought and sold in public markets. I will
explain this with an example. Say a company A has 100 outstanding shares and the share
price is Rs. 20, then market capitalization of the company will be 20*100=Rs. 2000

Large cap stocks:

These companies are well established and have a strong presence in the market. Companies like
TCS, Infosys and Wipro fall under this category. Investing in these companies are less risky.

Mid cap stocks:

These companies have the potential to grow big and are relatively riskier compared to the large cap
companies.

Small cap stocks:

Start ups fall under this category and are highly risky compared to the above two. On the upside,
they can become a runaway success overnight.

The next essential aspect you should know is IPO (Initial Public Offer). A company raises money
from public through IPO. It sells its shares so as to bring in capital for its future development. Your
yield is high when you invest in a share due to the power of compounding.

 Key Financial Instruments Traded in Stock Market

Shares/ Equity:

Equities or stocks or shares give you ownership of a company. You can buy or sell shares through a
broker.

Mutual funds:

Here, the money is pooled from many investors and then invested in various financial instruments.
Investors are referred to as unit holders. Profit generated is distributed to unit holders in proportion
to the units held by them.
Bonds:

These are fixed income instruments also known as debt instruments by which government or a
company borrows money from investors at an agreed interest rate for a specific tenure. These are
less risky when compared to shares.

Derivatives:

A derivative is a financial contract whose value is derived from an underlying asset. It can be used
to mitigate a number of risks. Derivatives include forward, futures, options and swaps.
 Mutual Funds vs. shares:

 several companies. That is, there is diversification but this is not possible if you invest in
shares directly.
 Mutual funds are managed by professionals and all necessary research is done by them
whereas if one invests in shares, it is the responsibility of the individual to do proper research
about the company, price movement, etc.
 Mutual funds are sold as units and you are in no way connected with the growth story of the
company whereas when you invest in shares, you become a shareholder of the company and
may get dividends or profits if the company performs well.
 Risk gets mitigated in case of mutual funds as your money is invested in various companies
but this does not happen in case if you directly invest in shares.
 Investing in mutual fund is easy. On the other hand, investing in equity needs more of your
time and research.
 When you invest in mutual funds, you have no option of changing the stocks in your
portfolio as it is completely maintained by the fund managers. While investing in shares, you
can exit from a stock and buy some other stock anytime.
 To invest in mutual funds, you don‘t require a demat account whereas to invest in shares, you
need a demat account.
 To get better and higher returns, one has to stay invested in mutual funds for a longer time
period. While investing in shares, if you are a trader or a short term investor, you can get
better returns quickly if you use the right strategies of sell, buy or hold.
 Mutual funds have several other chargers like entry load, exit load, management fees, etc.
When you invest or trade in shares, brokerage charges are applicable.
 One has to clearly understand the differences between mutual funds vs stocks before
investing in the stock market. With clear financial goals in place and with proper asset
allocation, anyone can achieve their life goals.
Learned Detail Under Summer Training

 In the training we learn about the stock broking . In class we know the KARVY
stock broking services in INDIA .
 We learn about the investment in KARVY.

At Karvy, through the years of its development, one of the indispensable values that the
leadership has focused on is ‗continuous learning‘. To nourish this culture, there is a
dedicated Learning Center that caters to all aspects related to learning, growth, development
and progress – in alignment with the Mission, Values and Credo.

Leadership and learning being indispensable to each other, our leadership views L&D
(Learning and Development) as a way to invest in people.

The success story of the organization and the business transformation witnessed through
decades is attributed to the growing contributions to Human-Resource skills, by way of
conducting in-house programs that are well-researched. To also refresh global exposure, the
scope of interventions for senior leaders is expanded to external/top-notch institutes,
management schools and other resource centers that stand first-rate in the international
standards.

The L&D in Karvy is seen as the platform to enable career–growth for its employees. To
encourage consistent exposure, programs are commissioned to satisfy learning needs for
diverse aspects whether it is for a new incumbent, growing aspirant, senior leader, veteran, or
an enthusiast who wants to bring home an innovative idea. This includes inducting new
employees, Leadership development, Behavioral and Management, Functional / Process
training, Technical programs, and learning programs that are customized to serve the specific
needs of the business.
The framework in which the organization operates indicates that learning opportunity is
consciously made abundant here. The practice of helping employees question, experiment,
learn and grow is paramount in creating a learning ecosystem and this we believe, is one of
the key differentiators that enables personal and professional growth.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

India‘s economy is highly developing. The development is taken place due to the
growth in the financial system. This financial system provides the background to
various investors regarding varied options to invest.

 Thus, development of the economy depends on how these investors invest

for the well being in long run.
 Given the wide network, there are a number of trading terminals that
provide retail stock-broking facilities.
 KARVY offer online trading on both key platforms—National Stock
Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange.
 KARVY created a very robust trading platform that facilitates customers to
trade online not only in equities, but also buy fixed deposits, mutual funds,
commodities, currencies and also participate in a public issue.
 From that perspective, KARVY equity broking and advisory services are
beyond just a medium for buying and selling stocks and shares.

Instead, KARVY provide services which are multi-dimensional and

multi-focused in its scope.
CONCLUSION

While doing my summer internship program I came to a conclusion that this training has helped me
much in getting the through knowledge about some of the stock broking companies, how these
companies against each other for getting the more market share, how they are applying different
marketing strategies to attract customers and making them satisfied.

I came to know about the demat account, its benefits, how does it provides services the customers
of which I was totally ignorant when I started my project. I gathered much more knowledge about
Karvy Stock Broking Ltd. Its strategies, and how every employees of it work hard to achieve the
organisational goal I.e. achieve the maximum market share through customer satisfaction.

One thing that I noticed during my field work that many people of ALIGARH not much more
awarded about the various financial products and services of Karvy which had to be there. They are
ignorant about demat account and lack of knowledge and information about it scared them of
investing money in share market. So to generate awareness among them advertising campaign can
result in fruitful results.

Only a limited percentage of people are enjoying investing money in share market in ALIGARH.
Lastly and not the least as a coin has two sides, Karvy has favourable and unfavourable aspect is
that it provides lot of benefits to its customers which some of its competitors fail to provide and
again less awareness about it among people is its negative side which hinders them to invest their
fund confidently.
