Reading and Writing Numbers
 A number can be written both in figures and in words.
 Zeros are not read when they are used to hold the place value of
nonzero digits.
 In reading large numbers, the period names are read after each period,
except the unit period.

Study the example below:


Mars the red planet is 616 000 km away from the sun. How 616 000 km written in words?

Number in standard form : 616 000 km


: 616 Thousand, 000
Written in Words : six hundred sixteen thousand.
Notice that zeros hold the place of the missing digits in the units.
They are written but not read.
616 000 is written in words as “six hundred sixteen thousand.”
Study another Example:
The Bureau of Forest Development donated three seedlings to each pupil in Region 8. The total
number of seedlings donated was 64 821.
How do you read and write the number 64 821 in words and in symbol?

The number 64 821 is read as “six hundred twety-four thousand eight hundred twenty-one”.
In symbol, it is 624 821.
