1D Present simple (negative and interrogative)

1 Read the text about the Jones family. Then look at the table and complete the text with the present simple.

Alice and Bob Jones live with their family in Cardiff. They’ve got a
big house and there is a lot of housework. Everyone helps with the
housework, but they all have different jobs. Alice cooks dinner, but she

Aims: To review and practise the present simple in order
to ask and answer questions about facts and everyday
events.
Time: 10–15 minutes
Materials: 1 handout for each student

Exercise 1
• Give each student a handout and ask them to read
through the text about the Jones family, ignoring the
gaps. Set a time limit of one minute to encourage them
to read the text quickly. Ask: Who are Daniel, Josh and
Anne? (Daniel and Josh are two of the sons, Anne is the
grandmother.)
• Students look at the table and complete the gaps with
the correct form of the verbs. Set a time limit of three
minutes.
• Check answers by going round the class and asking
students to read sentences from the text.

Exercise 2

students to perform their interviews in front of the
class.
