The Basic Education department of Asia Pacific College of Advanced Studies held their first annual camping event at the Marcos Gonzalvo Estrella Sports Center as part of their 3-day Basic Education Day celebrations. The camping event included demonstrations and activities related to self-defense techniques, forest survival skills like starting a fire using bamboo, and first aid. Criminology students and instructors demonstrated defensive moves while a local Aeta guide taught the students how to start a fire through friction. BASIC EDUCATION 1ST ANNUAL CAMPING 2019

The basic education department held their first annual camping last October 18, 2019,
Friday at the Marcos Gonzalvo Estrella Sports Center. The said activity is part of the celebration
of their 3-day Basic Education Day.

The preparation for this exciting camping activity starts with the planning lead by the
School President with the intervention of the Basic Education’s Assistant Principal Ms. Lovely
Sotto and Coordinators, Ms. Lea Lazo, Ms. P Marseille Gonzales, Ms. Leslie Gonzales and Mr.
Erman Manrique with the help of the Coordinator of the College of Criminology, Ms. Anjanette
Layug and the Officer-in-Charge of the Student Affairs and Services, Ms. Honey Cell Martinez.

The highlights of the activity are divided in four parts; the first part is the Self-defense or
defensive techniques, the second part is the Forest Survival, third part is the First Aid Skills
Demonstration and the last part is the reflection activity which is part of the bonfire phase. After
completing the program, the persons involved in every phase of the activity is contacted by the
Camp Master, Ms. Layug.

The first activity which is the self-defense techniques is facilitated by the Criminology
part-time instructor Ms. Jonas Ragenil with the participation of Criminology students who
executed the different methods of defensing oneself in cases of incidents like hold-up, pointing a
knife or gun, or any confronting acts toward the victim. After the demonstration of Sensei
Ragenil, each student follows the different techniques and they also performed.

The second part of the program is the Forest Survival facilitated by Tata Kasuy, an Aeta
performer in the Pamulaklakin Trail at SBMA. He demonstrated how to start a fire by using the
“fire saw” friction method. Tata Kasuy demonstrated the steps on setting of fire, first is take the
bark of bamboo which is intact and completely dry. Second, take any sharp object and shave the
bark of the bamboo to get some wood shavings. Step three, take another piece of bark and dig
two holes in the bark, the keep aside. Fourth, take the wood shavings and fix it in the holes
created on the other bark, lay this on the ground. Last, hold the bark near the diaphragm and rub
this against the bark on the ground and after some frictional force, an ignition can be observed
and through this lit all the other wood shavings. After the demonstration of Tata Kasuy, the
group of campers followed the instructions of Tata Kasuy and they start setting a fire using the
bamboos.

While the forest survival skills demonstration is actually happening, the leaders and
students assigned in the cooking of rice starts at the cooking area using woods and coal.

The third part of the program is the First Aid Skills Demonstration discussed and
demonstrated by the Coordinator of the College of Nursing, Mr. Jayvee Daracay with the help of
the Student nurses. Mr. Daracay discussed the different emergency management skills in burns,
