Post Weld Heat Treatment
Post Weld Heat Treatment
a. Post weld heat treatment or stress relieving of all carbon and low alloy steel materials
as per the drawing, from technology section, heat treatment technology sheet/chart as
per relevant part UW-40 (a) of ASME Sec VIII Div.1 Edition 2019 will be prepared
b. QC shall check the identification of items before sending for heat treatment and after
receiving the items from heat treatment.
c. Material temperature shall be recorded with the help of calibrated automatic recorder
and calibrated thermocouples only.
d. Thermocouples shall be placed such that the entire component (including the
anticipated (hottest and coldest zones) is covered.
e. The maximum distance between any two thermocouples shall not exceed 4.6 metres
in any direction.
f. The temperature difference between any two thermocouples during heating and
cooling cycles shall not exceed 70°C. During holding period, there shall not be
temperature difference of more than 83°C between highest and lowest temperature
readings throughout the vessel.
g. Unless otherwise specified, the following rules shall apply to establish the nominal
thickness (t) for determining the soaking time for PWHT. Soaking time is accounted
as the time between the temperature crossing and leaving the minimum recommended
temperature.
h. For Butt welds; “t” shall be thickness of the weld. For bar stock “t” shall be the diameter.
For fillet welds, "t" shall be the throat thickness. If a fillet weld is used in conjunction
with a groove weld, nominal thickness (t) is the depth of the groove or the throat
dimension, whichever is
greater.
i. When a welded joint connects parts of unequal thicknesses, the nominal thickness
shall be the
the thinner of two adjacent butt‐welded parts including head to shell connections (or)
the thickness of the weld across the nozzle neck or shell or head or reinforcing pad or
attachment fillet weld, whichever is the greater (or) the thickness of the nozzle neck at
the joint in nozzle neck to flange connections (or) the thickness of the weld at the point
of attachment when a non-pressure part is welded to a pressure part.
j. Location of thermocouples is represented in below figure 1, K-type thermocouple are
used for measurements, Cleate type attachment will be made for thermocouples,
heating control system is through PID (Proportional Integral Differential) controllers
and Modulating Motors.
k. Saddle supports are used to support the vessel (or) part assembly & Bracings like
spiders are used to prevent distortion.
l. Heat treatment parameters like Loading temp., Rate of Heating, Soaking temperature,
soaking time, rate of cooling and unloading temperature of the equipment (or) sub-
assemblies are provided as per relevant codes and standards & service conditions and
basic details are as follows –
- Above 425°C, the rate of heating shall be not greater than 222°C/hr divided by
the maximum metal thickness of the shell or head plate in inches, but in no
case more than 222°C/hr.
- Above 425°C, cooling shall be done in a closed furnace (or) cooling chamber
at a rate not greater than 280°C/hr divided by the maximum metal thickness of
the shell or head plate in inches, but in no case more than 280°C/hr. From
425°C the vessel may be cooled in still air.
3. Time that the material spends at temperatures hotter than 480° C shall be recorded
and included in the calculation of total heat treatment time used for the maximum
PWHT condition.
m. Lead (or) Sulfur containing substances such as oil, grease, thread lubricants and paint
shall be removed from vessel surfaces prior to heat treatment.
n. Wherever practicable, heat the vessel as a whole in an enclosed furnace.
o. The overlap of 1.5m heated section shall be provided, if vessel is heated in more than
one heat in a furnace.
p. Refractory powder is used to prevent scaling on machined surfaces.
q. During PWHT, vessels shall be blocked and support
r. ed as necessary to avoid deformation or damage.
s. Any internal parts installed in the vessel prior to heat treatment shall be assessed to
ensure that their corrosion or material properties are not affected, and that their thermal
expansion will not negatively affect the free thermal expansion of the vessel.
