Experiment No. 1 Magnets and Magnetic Fields: Perez, Mikko B

1) The experiment analyzed the direction of magnetic fields and differences between magnetic fields of similar and opposite magnetic poles using bar magnets and iron filings. 2) For a single magnet, iron filings formed lines starting at the north pole and ending at the south pole, visualizing the magnetic field. 3) For magnets with similar poles, field lines curved away from each other with a gap in between. For opposite poles, field lines converged in the middle and iron filings connected the magnets.

Abstract: The objective of this experiment is to analyze determine the direction of magnetic field/magnetic lines and
distinguish differences between magnetic fields of similar and opposite magnetic pole. A magnet creates a magnetic
field around it. You cannot see a magnetic field, but you can observe its effects. A force is exerted on a magnetic
material brought into a magnetic field. The force is a non-contact force because the magnet and the material do not
have to touch each other. By conducting an experiment which consist of four parts, it is expected to attain the
following objectives through systematic analogy of the observe results to give a well – reasoned conclusion.

VI. Conclusions

There are unseen magnetic fields around single

magnets, between two magnets attracting each other, VII. Author’s Profile
and between two magnets repelling each other. North
and South polarized ends of magnets are where the
strong pulling and repelling occurs. With the use of iron
filings, we can see these magnetic fields. When iron
filings are sprinkled on a bar magnet, you see that these
magnetic field lines start at the magnet's north end and
will end at the magnet's south end just like on our part
1. On the part 2 and part 4 of our experiment where
both magnets was in the same polarity, iron filings are
sprinkled between two bar magnets which repel each
other, we see that the magnetic field line curve away
from each other and even stand on edge. The magnetic
field forces are pushing each other away, and this
causes the curving and standing on edge. However, if
field lines curve toward each other, it shows attraction. Name : Mikko B. Perez
