Principles of Reinforced Concrete Design: CE 307 CE32S3

This document contains a series of engineering calculations to determine the moment capacity, failure type, and reinforcement requirements for various reinforced concrete beams. The calculations include determining moment capacity considering factors such as beam dimensions, concrete strength, steel yield strength, steel arrangement and cover. Solutions are provided for each calculation in kN-m or number of reinforcement bars required.

1. A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm and a total depth of 450mm.
The longitudinal bars at the top are 2-28mm and 4-32mm at the bottom. Concrete
strength is f'c=21 MPa and steel yield strength fy=275 MPa. The steel cover is 70mm
(for both top and bottom steel). Determine the moment capacity (kN-m) of the beam.
Use WSD.
(Hint: To transform the compression steel area, multiply it by (2n-1); To transform
tension steel area, multiply it by n)
MOMENT CAPACITY OF THE BEAM=112.147703 kN-m
2. The beam shown has the following properties: concrete cover=40mm, ds= 10mm,
f'c=21 MPa, and fy=280 MPa. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the beam
in kN-m. Determine also the type of failure and the beam condition (under-
reinforced, over-reinforced or balanced condition)
MU=86.25 kN-m
UNDER REINFORCEMENT (EY<ES)
3. The beam shown has the following properties: steel cover=60mm, f'c=21 MPa,
and fy=420 MPa. Determine the ultimate moment capacity of the beam in kN-m.
Determine also the type of failure and the beam condition (under-reinforced, over-
reinforced or balanced condition)
MU=158.426 kN-m
4. (Past Board Exam Problem) A beam is simply supported on a span of 5meters
and carries the following loads: Superimposed dead load = 16 kN/m Live Load = 14
kN/m
Determine the following:
a) Maximum Moment at ultimate condition (kN-m)
b) Find the number of 16mm bars required if the design moment at ultimate loads is
200 kN-m
c) If the beam carries an ultimate concentrated load of 50 kN at midspan, what is the
number of 16mm bars required
a. Mu=141.91915 kN-M
b. 8 pcs
c. 3 pcs
5. A triangular beam having a base width of 300mm has a total depth of 600mm. It is
reinforced with 3-12mm bars placed at 70mm above the bottom of the beam.
f'c=20.7 MPa, fy=414 MPa. Calculate the ultimate moment capacity of the beam in
kN-m.

Mu=49.768 kN-M
6. Determine the dimensions of a rectangular beam and the required number of
25mm bars that will carry the following loads:
DL =85 kN-m
LL=61.875 kN-m
The span of the beam is 8800mm. Assume simply supported condition.
The properties are as follows:
f'c = 27.6 MPa and fy=414.7 MPa.
Company standard for beam width is b=0.4h. Use the minimum concrete cover as
per code. Diameter of stirrups =10mm. Beam dimensions should be a multiple of
50mm's
USE 250mmX55mm BEAM WITH 3-25mm Ø
