Demystifying Academic Conversation

In the discussion of “They say / I say”, there are few steps to improve your writing skills

effectively. The first one is - entering into conversation. When you enter a conversation of

ideas, you listen, and make sure that you understand what is being said.Then you come up

with your own idea providing it with examples and experiences. Your idea might agree or it

can be contradistinction to what “they” say, yet the purpose of “They say / I say” is to explain

that writing is not only about indicating your idea, but also reflecting what “they” are saying.

The next step is organizing your ideas. The templates can be used by students in order to

organize their ideas, however, some might think it will reduce their creativity. While it is

aimed to help students to grasp the concept of organizing ideas, and come up with their own

catchphrases. And the final step is using “they say” and “I say” properly. Contributing your

script with efficacious evidences makes your paragraph more interesting. You may either

agree or disagree what is being said, and using “I” will not be subject oriented as it is

considered. It can be used to avoid repetition of phrases such as “the truth is”, “the evidence

shows” and others. Thus, the purpose of this concept is to elucidate how to contemplate your

ideas by analyzing what “they” are saying.
