Fusion and Diffusion of Culture Hand-Out
Fusion and Diffusion of Culture Hand-Out
Every society throughout history has a set of cultural beliefs and practices that are
important to the people of that time. In this lesson, we will learn how culture spreads through
cultural fusion and diffusion.
Cultural Diffusion – is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group to
another. The mixing of world cultures through different ethnicities, religions and nationalities
has increased with advanced communication, transportation and technology.
Types of Diffusion
Relocation Diffusion – When a person migrates from their home and shares their culture
with a new location.
Expansion Diffusion – The spread of idea through a population where the amount of those
influence grows continuously larger.
Three Sub-types:
Contagious Diffusion
Hierarchal Diffusion
Stimulus Diffusion
Contagious Diffusion – A type of diffusion where the cultural element spreads from the
source (often a single person) to other person. It may first spread to people close to the
source, who then share the element with several people.
Hierarchal Diffusion – A form of diffusion where the cultural elements spreads from a
specific group within society to another.
Stimulus Diffusion – Describes the transfer of culture where the culture changes as it is
being diffused. The original culture element is blended with the culture in the location
where it’s spreading to fit into the already-established culture.
Example: Almost all cultural diffusions, will have some aspect of stimulus
diffusion, because of the ways culture adapts to new environmental, social, and
political conditions. Such as the changing of interpretations of religious texts as
they are translated into other languages.
Maladaptive Diffusion – The adaption of diffusing traits that are not practical or reflective
of a region’s environment or culture.
Example: The popularity of wearing blue jeans in any weather despite the
impracticality of wearing them in the countries with winter season.
Cultural Fusion – Is a phenomenon which emerges when two or more cultures inter-mingle
and produce a new culture.
Example: The song “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira which combines Haiti,
Columbia, the United States, Arabic Belly dancing from the Middle East and
North Africa.
Cultural fusion and diffusion is simultaneous and is such a process which cannot be
stopped, as it is not an act which people do consciously.
