Genetically Modified Food Essay
Genetically Modified Food Essay
Genetically modified! What comes to mind when we think about these words is something’s
DNA is modified / altered in order to achieve some improvement in the thing and correction in
the defects. So now people have started modifying foods which is called ‘Genetically modified
food’ (GMF) and other organisms and which are called ‘Genetically modified organisms’
(GMOs). Genetic modified food contains of different genes which helps it in different ways, for
example if the food has less nutrients or proteins by injecting these genes it can then have more
nutrients and proteins, then can have faster growth, etc. This gene technique allows the person to
change, add, mix, and also enhance the characteristics, attributes and the quality of the food.
There are concerns regarding the GMF there are some controversies caused, because it is said
that this genetically modified food can risk human health and also it has bad environmental
effects.
1
There are some common foods / crops that are genetically modified for some reason. The most
common crop that is genetically modified is ‘Corn’, as the 85% of corn which is grown on the
US land which is genetically modified. The Whole Food’s corn flakes company in the US uses
genetically modified corn. They modify corn because after modification it becomes repellent of
herbicide glyphosate, which is used in killing the weeds. Then we have Soy which is the second
common crop which is also genetically modified crop, this modified may lower the LDL
cholesterol known as bad cholesterol. Even the cows are given some rBGH which is known as
recombinant bovine growth hormone to increase the production of the milk. There are many
other types of common food that has been genetically modified such as yellow crookneck squash
and zucchini, alfalfa, canola, sugar beets, and many others. 2
The process of making a genetically modified food or genetically modified crops is to first
identify the agriculture need then according to it and decide a genetic trait. Then compare and
analyze different types of genomes to identify the trait. Then the trait is inserted into the new
genome and they use gene guns to complete this action. Then the last step is growing the GMF
or GMO.3

There are many advantages of using GMF crops / food as well as disadvantages. So some of the
advantages of using the GMF / GMO are it can be modified according to the health benefits so
for example the nutritional value can be enhanced in order to get more proteins for better health.
It takes very fewer lands to grow more food in lesser amount of time; as the demand is very high
of food and there is less amount of land for farming and less number of people who farm, and
also the population is growing rapidly so this could be the main advantage of GMO that it takes
requires less lands, and gives out more and quicker the process. GMF / GMO process saves
energy, water and soil. Simple modification of the crops and food that can cause major effect like
for example simple nutrients modification in rice that can lead to more nutritional value as
consumed by almost the whole world at daily basis. Doesn’t need of applying too much of
pesticides and herbicides to the crops which can lead the farmers spending less amount of money
on all these and also the health benefits increases. This technique can save crops from extinction.
GMO uses very less amount of water.5
The disadvantage of using the GMO / GMF is that it can cause damage to the insects that are
important for our ecosystem. It can cause damage to the environment as it is not the natural way
of planting / farming. It can cause allergic reactions. The toxins that are present in the GMF can
result damage in the human body and can damage the soil. 6
GMF can lead to health issues like allergic reaction, liver problems, reproductive problems, any
disease, and also death.7 The factors getting affected along is the human health, which is the
main concern of all as it discussed before and then there also environmental effects which is
another concern here.
If the society has limited resources then the smart thing is to use GMO technique as there this
provides to feed more people in shorter time and uses less resources. But on other hand it also
harms human health and environment which is also another concern. And to prevent further
complication they have to think and then react. I think in this situation it’s better to eat GMO as
it has more advantages and also it can save many life and also uses lesser resources.
I think everything in the world has a pros and cons and you have to identify which is more
feasible and more important according to some factors corresponding. And I think in this context
I support GMO as seeing the future the population is growing too fast and we need faster
production and also we can make it more nutritional and also modify according to the need.
