for normal incidence). Necessity of extended source. Newton's rings.

Diffraction: Two kinds of diffraction, Fraunhoffer diffraction at single slit,


Fraunhoffer diffraction at circular aperture, Plane diffraction grating, Formation of
multiple spectra and determination of wavelength, Dispersive power of grating,
Resolving power of optical instruments, Meaning of resolving power, Rayleigh's
criterion of resolution, Resolving power of grating, prism, telescope and microscope.

Polarization: Polarization of light waves. Polarization by reflection. Law of Malus.,


Geometry of calcite crystal., Double refraction., Nicol's prism., Elliptically and
circularly polarized light and production of circularity polarized light., Optical
activity. Specific rotation., Freshnel's theory of optical rotation., Laurent's half shade
polarimeter., Photoelasticity.

Ultrasonics: Ultrasonic waves., Production and detection of ultrasonic waves.,


Properties of ultrasonics., Applications of ultrasonic waves.

Electricity and magnetism: The magnetic field, Magnetic force on a current., Torque
on a current loop. Ampere's law, B near a long wire, Magnetic lines of induction.,
Two parallel conductors, B for a solenoid. Biot-Savart law, Faraday's law of
induction, Lenz' s law, Induction-a qualitative study, e/m by Thomson's method.

Thermoelectricity: Seebeck effect, Variation of thermo-emf. with temperature.


Thermoelectric series., Measurement of thermo-emf., Law of intermediate metals.,
Law of intermediate temperature, Peltier effect, Thomson effect., Total emf in a
thermocouple, Thermoelectric power, Applications of thermoelectric effect.

X rays: Discovery and production of x-rays., Origin and properties of x-rays.,


Applications of x-ray., Photoelectric effect and its uses.

PRACTICALS: Practical based on the above syllabus.
