Before
everything else, let me tell you some rules and regulations. First, be
responsible to your belongings and valuable things. Bring it with you all the
time. Second, synchronize your time with my time so that no one will be left
behind. Lastly, observe body system. Always be with someone wherever
you go.
Welcome, we have just arrived at Ilocos Sur, one of the provinces in
the Philippines located in Ilocos Region. The capital of the city is Vigan
which is known for its preserved Spanish colonial and Asian architecture.
The Ilocos Region encountered a series of conflicts which prompt the
Spaniards to divide the region that is now known as Ilocos Sur, Ilocoes
Norte, Abra and La Union. This event brought prosperous growth into being
known as historical and cultural hubs of the country. The inhabitants were
referred to Ylocos meaning lowlands. The entire region was then called by
the ancient name Samtoy which in Ilokano mean, our dialect. The region
was later called by the spaniards as Ylocos and its people as Ilocanos.
On our first destination, we have the National Museum of the
Philippines, Ilocos Complex.. This is a series of museums in memory of two
historical personalities, Padre Jose Burgos and the Philippine's former
president, Elpidio Quirino. One of the museums in the complex is Padre
Burgos’ House, which the locals call bahay na bato. His childhood home
has his personal belongings on display including the vintage writing tools
that he used to compose letters. While President Quirino’s museum houses
has his personal effects and other mementos, including the things he wore
as president. The highlight of the exhibit is a replica of the former
president’s office.
Our next stop is the Calle Crisologo which is the Vigan's most popular
tourist attraction. It is surrounded with ancestral houses that are
reminiscent of old Spanish towns. The street is a busy commercial district,
with most shops selling antiques, hand-woven products, bagsi wine,
burnay, furniture and jewelries. A kalesa ride is a must try to roam around
the Calle Crisologo and the rest of the Vigan Heritage Village. Ilocanos are
also known for serving some of the best dishes in the Philippines which you
can find along the calle crisologo. Longganisa is one of Ilocos' most
defining dishes as they are distinctly small and plump. Bagnet, Empanada
and chicharon of Ilocanos are the must try to eat here in Ilocos Sur.
Now, we’re here at our last destination for today, the Vigan Cathedral
which is also called the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It stands in a
prominent spot just in front of Plaza Salcedo, which is why you might find
many tourists having their pictures taken between these notable structures.
The cathedral pays homage to Baroque architecture as seen in the ornate
details outside and inside the church, although the cathedral has its share
of renovations too to make it sturdier.
That ends our very exciting tour. I hope everyone enjoyed and
learned a lot from our trip. Let me just remind each and every one to check
your stuffs. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me. Once
again, this is Orly Capina. Enjoy the rest of your day. Thank you and
goodbye!
