Candidates Are Required To Give Their Answers in Their Own Words As Far As Practicable. The Figures in The Margin Indicate Full Marks

This document contains a 7 question exam for an Applied Mechanics course. It includes questions about mechanics concepts like forces, motion, momentum, and rotational dynamics. Students are asked to calculate values like tension, reaction forces, velocities, accelerations, and angular velocities/accelerations given diagrams and equations describing mechanical systems involving spheres, blocks, springs, pulleys and more. The exam covers a wide range of essential mechanics topics and requires analyzing physical situations, applying equations of motion, and determining unknown values through calculations.

POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2009

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Applied Mechanics Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a. Two spheres I and II of radii 100mm and 50mm respectively are 10

placed on a container as shown in the figure below. Sphere I of
mass 50Kg is suspended with a string AB of length 200mm and
sphere II of mass 25Kg is placed on top of it. Determine the
tension in AB and the reaction from the walls of the container.

b. Determine the resultant of three forces as shown: 5

2. a. Referring to the figure shown, determine the least value of the 8

force P to cause motion to impend rightwards. Assume the
coefficient of friction under the blocks to be 0.18 and pulley to be
frictionless.

b. Determine by direct integration the moment of inertia of the

7
shaded area with respect to the x axis and y axis respectively.

OR
Determine the centroid of area bounded by curvey y 2 = 4x, and the line y
= x by direct integration. 7

3. a. The motion of the particle is defined by the relation x = 4t 3-15t2- 7

16t+12 where x and t are expressed in meters and seconds
respectively. Determine (i) when the velocity is zero (ii) the
position and total distance travelled when the acceleration is zero.
b. A basketball player shoots when she is 5m from the backboard.
Knowing that the ball has an initial velocity v0 at an angle of 300 8
with the horizontal, determine the value of v 0 when d is equal to
220mm.
4. The 3kg collar was moving down the rod with a velocity of 3m/s when a 15
force F was applied to the horizontal cable. Assuming a coefficient of
friction 0.2 between the collar and rod. Determine the magnitude of
force F if the collar stopped after moving 1m more down the rod.

5. In a game of billiards, ball a is given an initial velocity V 0 along the 15

longitudinal axis of the table. It hits ball B and then bal C, which are
both at rest. Balls A and C are observed to hit the side of the table
squarely at A' and C' respectively, and B is observed to hit the side
obliquely at B'. Knowing that V 0 = 4m/s, VA = 1.92m/s, and a = 1.65m,
determine (a) the velocities V B and VC of balls B and C, (b) the point C'
where ball C hits the side of table. Assuming frictionless surface and
perfectly elastic impacts.
OR
A 30kg Block is dropped from a height of 2m onto a 10kg pan of a
spring scale. Assuming the impact to be perfectly plastic, determine the
maximum deflection of the pan. The constant of te spring is k =
20KN/m.

6. a. Describe General Plane motion with example. 5

b. In the engine system shown, the crank AB has a constant 10
clockwise angular velocity of 2000r/min. For the crank position
indicated, (Refer fig. 6a), determine (i) the angular velocity of
the connecting rod BD, (ii) the velocity of the pinston P.
OR
In the pulley shown has a mass moment ot inertia of 20kg m 2 and is
initially at rest. The outside radius is 0.4 m and the inner radius is 0.2m.
Determine (a) the angular acceleration of each pulley, (b) the angular
velocity of each pulley after point A on the cord has moved 3m.

7. Write short notes on (Any Two) 5×2

a. dynamic Equilibrium
b. parallel Axis Theorem
c. impulsive motion and impact
d. work done by couple
