Unit: Printmaking
Lesson 1: Object and identity

3. Brainstorm (graphic organizers):


a. Make a list of 6-10 words that describes who you are
b. Make a list of 6-10 topics that are important to you
c. Think about an object that is significant to you (Think about a time where
you’ve experienced an event with this object. For example, a reward that
you earned, a special present given to you by someone that you care
about, an old photograph, a special or difficult moment that you’ve
experienced with the object or because of the object). Write how this
relationship and experience you’ve had with or because of the object has
affected your identity.

Hw:

Students will bring an object (1-2) that represents who they are to class next
time. Please answer the question from class again if you decide to change your
object from class at home.

Lesson 2: Sketch a drawing of your object from home


Objective: What is an object from your home that is significant to your identity? (fashion
item, household item, an accessory, etc.)
1. Vocab review and demo: line weight and texture
a. Line weight- different sizes of line ranging from thin to thick
b. Visual texture- The actual texture that we see and imitate with the use of
line and mark making
2. Object drawing: Create a 6x6 frame in sketchbook. Plan how you want to place
this object in the composition. Students may include up to 2 objects (reasonably
sized). (show example images of compositions).
3. Background: where did you find this object? Where was it sitting? Show a
glimpse of where this object was
4. Go back to brainstorming chart. Choose a word that best describes who you
are/important topic to you and add the word into your drawing. Position the word
on top or at the bottom of the frame. Use the font types as reference to write out
the word. Write each letter backwards.
5. HW: finish your sketch of the object home

Lesson 3: Transferring image onto styrofoam plate and carving styrofoam plate
PPT: vocab
1. Carving negative and positive space (show an example print and demo
w/overhead projector)
2. Mirror image

Steps/tasks:
1. Transfer (copy) drawing by lightly sketching onto styrofoam surface with gentle
pressure (light enough to see the pen marks)
2. Carve into styrofoam plate (neg. and pos. space)
3. Go over the pencil marks with heavier pressure with ball point pen (go into the
styrofoam plate). Heavy enough to create indents and creases onto surface but
not enough to make a hole through.
